First up, we are in London so if you aren't, you will pass out at this quote. Can anyone in London (SE/S) tell me if £1000 is as bad as it sounds for this:
adjustable bookshelves in white mdf made off site and fitted for a v slightly tricky space in a mezzanine under the eaves in lounge. Approx size 3m 70cms wide x 25cm deep x 1m70 high, with the structure of the bookshelf to rest on an existing 25cm shelf (so it's not floor to ceiling). At about the 2m wide point the roof drops gradually to about 90cms.
Ideally we would like a backing board which may slightly reduce the 25cms depth of the shelves as need it to soundproof a bit (wall is shared with neighbour's flat).
Our first quote was £1600 + VAT. Spoke to a guy who says he can do it for £1000. It still sounds an awful lot to me, even for London but am I in dreamland? (we had 2 quotes to replace a boiler of £3000 and £3500.....old boiler still in place ). I may be an old sheep, but am I being fleeced, fellow Londoners?

I think it is expensive if he is using MDF. If the materials were better then that quote would be more reasonable.
Have you considered buying custom made shaleves & fitting them yourselves?
I found an Ebay seller who will sell solid oak floating shelves cut to size for about £60 each with all the fittings. The length he quoted me for was 5cm thick x 1.12m long x 20cm wide

I didn't buy off him yet as I am still thinking about it but I would much rather have a better quality material & fit it myself as the floating shelves look easy & the important part is he will cut them to the exact size you want.0 -
It feels like a particle board wall, although it's external (prob space between it and the other wall behind) in which case would we not have to do a backing board and vertical boards? We'd only gone for MDF as we ideally wanted white. There's a lot of wood in the flat's lounge already (or wood veneer more like
). I'll def message him on ebay about some other shelving (less complicated) and see what he says about the lounge bookshelves. thanks!
PS husband emailed one of those 'real wood' designer custom made bookshelf outfits - quote came back for over £5gs. I somehow didn't need to post here 'is this reasonable' lol.0
