    !!!!!! Me!!!!!!

I changed my name by deed poll last year...or thought I had. After reading this post I dug out my paperwork. At the yop it says Change of Name Deed and at the bottom it says "I make this declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the Statutory Declaration Act 1836

I did it at the solicitors (he was a B*****D) who handled my divorce. >:(

Is this Deed Poll or just a statutory declaration? Did I get what I paid for? :-/

No, it sounds like you asked to change name by deed poll, and, thinking you wouldn't know any better the cheap git did it with a plain and simple SD.

Tthe end result is the same of course, your name is changed, but I wouldn't be happy with a solicitor that did that to me.

Well I suppose that, like you say, the end result is the same but my solicitor was a complete waste of time when he dealt with my divorce and I really shouldn't have expected anything less that for him to bodge my change of name too  >:(

Thing is, because he c0cked my divorce up on soooo many levels, he told me he'd do my Change of Name for just £5.00. I thought he'd done me a favour  >:(

So let me get this right.

I can change my name with that document, signed by the solicitor.

I then send copies of this to all my providers, as evidence of name change. So for example, will the Passport office accept this?

Secondly, I guess I can tell agencies over a period of time. Hence for example I can travel with a passport with my old name, while other providers have my new name? Eventually everyone has my new name.

Any implications here? Like: Inland Revenue mark your computer record as "ripe for inspection", because name change is (even slightly) suspect? Ever heard of such an example?

I found that this documentation was accepted by all the statutory agencies:- passport, tax, NHI/medical, banks, building socs, service providers etc, etc.. If you send in your passport and the declaration form they will amend your passport to show your new name. I am aware that it is not strictly necessary to have a change of name document but it certainly makes life easier as you can then prove when the change took effect. And, in my case anyway, it didn't seem to ring any alarm bells with the Inland Revenue.

You do not need a document to change your name. As pointed out above you can call yourself anything you wish provided there is no intention to deceive.

However, now most statutory bodies will only accept the change of name if it is evidenced by a statutory declaration or deed poll.

You should change your name with everyone all at once. Otherwise you have technically not revoked your new name and will have perjured yourself by swearing the declaration.

    Many thanks.

I don't wish to perjure myself as it sounds painful. :P

You don't need a solicitor or pay anyone to change your name by deed poll. Check out
    http://www.kempston.net/namechange.html

for a sample deed poll. Fill your names, ask a friend to witness your signature, and there you go.

sra555 that's the same wording as the one I've got.

I've used it for everything, banks, utilities and for giving notice to marry.

I did the same whilst waiting for my divorce, I didnt want to go back to my maiden name so needed to make a statutory declaration, my solicitor drew up the document and I had to take it to another solicitor to do the 'swearing' of the document I paid £5 he signed it and then I took it to the bank, sent it off to dvla and passport and all went through ok so if yours is the same then all should be ok, all it is really is you swearing you will only use your new name and not your old one for fraud etc. The document doesn't become binding and law until you have had it sworn and signed by an independant solicitor. Hope this helps
