Hi people, have been looking around the internet with reference to changing my surname. It seems that instead of going to a solicitor you can change your name on the internet through numerous sites for around £30. Does anyone know if this is actually a recognised way to change your name and if so does anyone know of a good place to do it and how? Any advice apreciated, thanks!

A friend of mine has just been to the solicitors and has told me its less than £18 to change his name by deed poll (and that is not benefit dependant).0

I did it by Statutory Declaration a few years ago...the solicitor just charged £1 for witnessing it. Have not had any probs with Passport or tax people etc...all were happy to accept the SD♥♥♥ Genius - 1% inspiration and 99% doing what your mother told you. ♥♥♥0

Allexie is right, you don't need to spend much money at all to change your name legally. There is no compulsion to do it by deed poll, or even to use any kind of "official" body or organization, either internet company or anyone else.
You can legally change your name yourself simply by statuatory declaration, which is basically just a piece of paper that states your intention to change your name henceforth to Albert Brocolli Floret Bunty McFiggins the Third (or whatever new name you have chosen).
I'll bet if you google you can find several good examples of suitable wording online. Then, as has been suggested, get it witnessed by a local lawyer and away you go. All done and nar'y a penny spent.0 -

!!!!!! Me!!!!!!
I changed my name by deed poll last year...or thought I had. After reading this post I dug out my paperwork. At the yop it says Change of Name Deed and at the bottom it says "I make this declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the Statutory Declaration Act 1836
I did it at the solicitors (he was a B*****D) who handled my divorce. >:(
Is this Deed Poll or just a statutory declaration? Did I get what I paid for? :-/Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
This was the wording that I used:-
I, (insert new name here) of (insert address here), do solemnly and sincerely declare that I was formerly known as (insert old name here) but that I have adopted and wish hereafter to use in substitution for that name the name of (insert new name here) and I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the provisions of the Statutory Declarations Act 1835.
Signed............................... Date.......................
Formerly.............................
Then get solicitor to sign, date and stamp it.

Both my older kids changed their names and have NI cards driving licence etc and even got married in the new name with no difficulty whatso ever without ever declaring anything or changing by deed-poll.................................they just became known by their new names and when the oldest married produced birth certificate in old name along with medical card in new name and signed the marriage register 'formerly'...................this was not put onto the actual licence. The passport was acheived by sending birth certificate and letter stating new name is used for all purposes.
Why bother paying anybody ;D
You can call yourself what you like and the only proviso is ,it is not done for fraudulent purposes.0 -
Hi Spendless
We both changed our names upon our marriage - we hyphenated our surnames. If I had been the only one to do it, I probably wouldn't have needed the deed poll. Or if we'd made up our minds before the wedding, then he could have changed his before we got married, and my marriage certificate would have been used instead for all the paperwork...
But I didn't decide what to do about my name until the honeymoon - hence the hassle!(And then he said he'd take the same name too... :-* )
