Help we have not been paid!!!

Hello peeps I need a bit of advice
My partner recently left his job and has recieved his wage slip and P45 through the post without any problems. However as of yet we have not had his final wage packet.
He was due to be paid between the 7th and 10th of February.
On the 8th of Feb I rang the company boss to ask when we should be expecting any money in the bank. She told me that they will be sending a cheque because they do not have time to keep going to the bank to put money in.
After still not recieving a cheque by Wednesday 13th Feb I rang the company again only to be told that she had been ill over the weekend and the cheque was posted late monday evening.
It is now Thursday 14th Feb and there is still no cheque. I rang again and asked if we could meet up to get a cheque face to face and they could cancel the one that they have supposedly posted then everything will be sorted. They told me that to cancel a cheque they will incur £10 bank charges (is this right) also they want to ring the bank to make sure the cheque hasnt already been cashed (definitly not by us.
Where do we stand on this
1) if they try tellingh us the cheque has been cashed?
2) If they keep avoiding paying us?
My partner left this job because they were messing him about. No notice was given but he had only been working there for 3 months and no contract had been signed.
Please could you give us any advice you can, as we really do need this money. We have a lot of bills to pay and my 5yr old son is getting cold at night as we cannot afford to put the heating on.
Any help is greatly appreciated

They say that the cheque is in the post??
Ask them for the cheque number and the amount so that you can check it with the bank. Do you know if it was sent 1st or 2nd class?
Get them to confirm the address it was sent to and also ask when the accompanying letter was dated. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

Latest update!!
Rang old employer at 5:30 pm to find out what is happening.....they have contacted the bank and the cheque has not been cashed (obviously as we havent had our money!!)
when asked what they are doin next he said 'I have a new cheque in an envelope sat here ready to post tonite' (bcoz the last one did sooooo well :S)
I said can we just meet up somwhere to take it in person but he wasnt having any of it, kept telling me we would get it tomorrow morning if he posts it tonite. ( after 5:30pm i have my doubts)
Anyway I asked him if he could at least post it recorded delivery so they will no that the cheque has arrived (he didnt seem to understand the need for this
)
My OH has a day off tomorrow and I even suggested that he can go anywhere to meet them tomorrow but oh.......they are busy working and going away for the weekend!! how convenient!!!! If OH had been paid maybe we could have had a nice valentines weekend treat   !!!!!
sorry to have a rant in here but i'm getting so stressed out being messed around0 -
I would ring these people - I am sure i read somewhere that withholding wages is illegal

Did you get your cheque?
You are probably waiting for this money to pay some bills, so maybe contact the URGENT bills that are due & explain the problem. They may give you an extension for a week or so. I had to do this with my Mother in Laws bills when she went in for a hip op as she couldn't pick her benefits & everyone gave us a weeks grace for free. If you ask before it is due, they are less likely to charge you.:j

They are definately messing you about big time. I would call in trading standards on them if they do not cough up. Do you have legal support with your buildings and contents or just contents insurance?0
