Barm Brack

Years ago I used to make a barm brack but I have lost the recipe and the modern ones just aren't as good. It was nothing fancy but it was really moist and fruity and froze well. I remember that I had to soak 1lb of mixed fruit in 1 pint of cold tea overnight and I know I used sugar, an egg, and SR flour but Ican't remember the quantities or anything else like oven temperature. Please can anyone help? thanks.

What a coincidence - as I was only browsing an old recipe book am today. this is the one from there:
425ml cold tea
200g brown sugar
350g mixed dried fruit
275g s/r flour
1 beaten egg
Put tea, sugar and fruit in bowl , cover and leave overnight.
Sift flour into bowl and gradually beat in the egg and tea mixture. line tin with double thickness greased paper and spoon in mixture. preheat oven to 180c/350F. bake for approx 1.5hrs
never tried it myself - is it any good?0 -
Thanks very, very much. I have been looking for this again for ages....about 2 years in fact. It was my MiL's receipe and she died about 6 years ago aged 96!
It's the best barm brack type fruit loaf I've ever come across. Eat it just slightly warm with butter. I always made two and froze one. Trust me it's amazingWombling £457.410 -
I've used this recipe many times but with a slight variation.
I've actually put the dried fruit and sugar into the cold tea and brought it to the boil and then allowed to stand overnight to cool down. I found this really does help to plump up the fruit!
OR you can make the tea and just pour straight over the dried fruit - either way works great!0
