returning without reciept

Hi, needing some information from my fellow MSErs please.
Can anyone advice if I have any rights to return an item that has developed a fault. Big problem though, I can not find the reciept, and paid cash so cant show them date etc on by bank statement.
I have a quilt set, that after a couple of washes has developed frayed areas in the piping and decoration, (it looks like the hems were not made wide enough, so they have come undone.) I have got a second set that is perfectly fine, so I know its not that my washing machine is not to blame.
The shop say without a reciept they are not 'allowed' to do an exchange or credit note, (I was not expecting a refund, I just want a decent quilt cover)
The cover has the original labels with the stores name on etc, so I can show it is an original item, but they are not interested, I just dont get it.
I suppose legally there is a condition that I have to prove I bought it, but when it is obviously faulty I would have thought it would be reasonable for the shop to help, even if it was just 'goodwill' rather than 'duty'
Any thoughts?

you need proof of purchase though even if it has the store name on it it doesnt mean it was bought from there for definite plus it wouldnt show how long the goods have been in your possession
best bet is looking for goodwill, how your very disappointed in their service, if they have a head office go to them?
out of interest how long ago was this?Yes Your Dukeiness

You can't prove when you bought it or how old it is. Without that information, the retailer shouldn't have to accept the product back.
Sorry, i doubt you'll get a refund unless it's somewhere with a very high level of goodwill0 -
I have to agree I guess it is a long shot, but just by looking at it they would be able to see its hardly been used.
I got it just before christmas by the way.0 -
Is it a wll known company?Have you spoken to a Manager? This is one instance where you think common sense could prevail,if you have 2 identically aged items and one is fine and one is not,and you are not aSKING FOR A CASH REFUND.iiF IT WAS ME i WOULD APPEAL TO SOMEONE HIGHER.OOPS sorry caps0

It depends on the shop. If its an own brand then you can prove that you bought it there (unless it is marked as a second I suppose) but you also need to show how long you've had it. If its a newish line though, that would help to show it wasn't old.
I had some saucepans from John Lewis and after about 5 years the handle snapped off one. I didn't have the receipt (obviously) after all that time but I was annoyed and took it into a store to show then hoping they'd give me a discount off a new one (was up front with how old it was) and to my astonishment, they gave me a replacement free of charge!
I see no one has suggested yet that you buy yourself a replacement now, and keep the receipt, in case you need to take back one which is damaged for a refund in a few weeks. Quite right. That would be naughty!0 -
I worjk in retail and I think our policy is that we'll replace it or give a credit note to the value of the goods on the day it's returned, a bit unlucky if it's gone to sale.0

thriftymanc wrote: »I second the idea of buying a replacement and then taking the faulty item back with the new receipt - I've done this quite a bit! I seem to be quite unlucky with things like irons, vacuum cleaners and so on, you'd think I'd have learnt my lesson after a while but inevitably my recently acquired electrical appliance breaks and I've long since thrown away the receipt. It's too much hassle trying to argue with the staff so I just buy a new one and return the old one a day or two later using the new receipt, never had a problem. It might be 'naughty' technically but it's less hassle for everyone involved, and it's not like you're scamming the shop out of money - they sold you something faulty, you get a replacement, no problems.
You're obviously quite an accomplished liar then?
Ther's nothing "naughty" about it. Just Dishonest.0 -
I don't think you should all be advocating what is technically fraud on the forum guys0

Hiya
I work in shop which sells quilt covers and normally if something is faulty we'll exchange it no problems (with or without a reciept), issues do arrise if someone wants a refund without a reciept. You need to speak to the manager of the store, if no luck speak to customer services and go from there.0
