Post Offices will verify copies of original documents for free.

This I did not know: So, they will sign and stamp the documents (as requested by the bank/building society)? Thanks.

Yip, obviously better to go in when post office isnt particularly busy, just ask for the copy to be stamped and countersigned as being a true copy of the original. ( i did this with my daughters Birth Certificate rather than send in an original, ridiculous people considering a solicitor for what is not a legal task.

Building Societies/Banks are not asking for legal documents to be produced, all they do in a branch ( in person application) is certify that a copy is a true copy of an original.

All they say is countersigned by a "professional person" ( Doesnt say by a Legal Person)

Im sure that a fellow BS or Bank would countersign a copy of an original document for ID purposes as well.

Interesting then that NS&I refuse it. Yes with building societies and banks, with the exception of Icesave I have used ones that have a branch that is accessible and just gone in and had them do it.

Whats "interesting" tradetime  is that NS&I do attempt to verify ID online, only if that is unsuccessful do they ask for ID by post.

Whats also "interesting" is that in decades of years before electronic ID verification i havent read of people paying solicitors to get IDs verified.

Ive got 36 Building Society Accounts, every single one + accounts now closed were opened by posting an original paper driving licence.

Proving ID is not a big deal for 99.9999999 % of the Population, and here is a poster miffed as well by your thoughts about paying a solicitor to verify ID

Oh, btw, never heard of a solicitor having to verify someone to open a bank account in, well, decades. I suspect there is a substantial charge for this?

identification for new Dunfermline Direct customers You must open your account with a cheque from your nominated account (see “opening an account” section above). If your nominated account is a bank account, your deposit cheque must show your name and account details (a joint account is acceptable). This is our confirmation of your identity. If your nominated account is a building society account, your deposit cheque must be issued by the building society, and you must ask them to verify the name and number of the account either on the back of the cheque or by separate letter. This is our confirmation of your identity. We also need one original item (which is less than 3 months old) from the following list, to confirm your current address:
    1. bank/building society/credit card/mortgage statement. The statement from your bank/building society account cannot be from your nominated account.
    2. electricity/gas/telephone bill.
    3. council tax bill.
Your document will be returned to you. We will not accept responsibility for the loss of or damage to the document or any liability arising from that loss or damage. We will also carry out a search on the voters roll as an identity/address check.

I'm completely aware of what they "try to do" I am also completely aware that they require me to provide 2 verified copies of documents.

Verified by a Banker (well I could go to a bank and see if they will do it, but I doubt it since it's not for their account and not part of the service the provide ad hoc) authorised financial intermediary (not even sure what one of those are, so I'm pretty sure I don't have one at the moment) Mortgage Broker (well I'm not gonna take out a mortgage to get this doene free) Accountant (haven't got one yet since I've been a tax exile for the last five years) teacher (bit old to have one of those, and don't know any personally) Doctor (don't have one of those) Minister of religion (suppose I could rock down to the local church and see will the clergy sign it,) civil servant (don't know any personally, but I suppose I could accost one) or dare I say it lawyer.

  • Hi,
The West Bromwich will 'electronically' identify you - i.e. check you out on the electoral register and only if there is any descrepancy will they come back to you for further proof of who you are. There is no charge for this. I opened an account with them Feb 2007 and is was really straightforward. Sally

Thanx Sally, having only arived back in this country back end of November, the electoral register isn't working for me yet. Not surprisingly it takes a little time to kick in. , I'll have an accountant sorted out in the next couple of weeks, and probably a doctor, so it'll be less of a pita.
