Manchester Picaadilly-transport to airport

hi i am going to florida in April and need to travel to Manchester from london.

I am looking at the cheap deals with Virgin trains £5 single ticket.

There are 3 adults and 3 children going. My question is that is it easy to get to the Airport from here.

If I buy a supersaver ticket it will cost us £50 in total, to the airport with one stop at Picadilly but Virgin only give you 10 minutes to get to the other train and with 3 adults 3 children, hand luggage and suitcases not sure if that will be enough time? Does anyone know how easy it is?

If I wait and see what offers come up it will probably cost us £15 in total to get to Picadilly. Are there any services from Picadilly to the station by bus etc. I checked on the web and they say a single ticket from Picadiilly to airport is £10 so would not be worth me buying the cheap ticket.

We are staying at the Crowne Plaza near the airport. Would prefer not to get a cab as DS, DD and niece won't have their car seats (sorry I am a bit of a worrier).

Any ideas, please?

Picadilly is a lovely station, but it is very big. If the platforms are not close together, you may struggle to make it in ten mins. However, they should allow you on the next train if you miss it through no fault of your own.

Don't know about other means of transport to the airport, but the trains are so frequent, I would choose that option x

(Did I just call a train station lovely?!)
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Thank you so much for your help.

May get DH to take the suitcases in a taxi to our hotel from Picadilly and I can go with MIL and the 3 children on the train to the airport. Then get a transfer from there.

Oh Gatwick is so much easier. We would have been able to get twilight check-in as well then.

i was only worried with the connecting train as it isn't a virgin train so not sure if they will let us. If they don't it would cost us £10 each!!!Madness!!

There is a bus to the airport- number 43. It is a busy route as it goes throught studentville but it is a low-liner so you can wheel on pushchairs and cases. You pick it up at piccadilly gardens which is walkable from the train station, or you can get a metrolink tram. Journey will take around 1 hour.

I would however consider a black cab, many are fitted with a booster seat for your smallest and the other two can travel in the rear facing seats. They are built like tanks too! It may cost you less than your bus tickets at around £20.
  • thank you squashy. do black cabbies have boosters then? Any idea how long it would take to get from picadilly to the crowne plaza at manchester please.

thank you so much for everyones help. Everything is easy when it is only adults. :D

    Hi,

There are trains literally every 15-20mins that go from Manchester Picadilly train station to the airport. I normally get this train as it stops at my station on the way back home. I think its around £3 for a single adult fare from picc to the airport!

  • The train is definately the best option. A cab will be quite expensive - even from South Manchester to Airport a local minicab company will be best part of £20, so I imagine at least £30 from Picadilly.

The trains are regular and I looked up the price myself for an early morning one the other day and was pleasantly surprised how cheap they are (less than £3 peak time). The bus will take at least an hour and knowing costs of buses in Manchester quite likely cost more.
  • thank you for all you advice. think we will go by train to the airport and hope we cam make it in the 10 minutes!!!! Guess as long as one of can stand there hopefully they should let us all on. Shouldn't they?!

Then from the airport we can go to the hoteL We will certainly need a holiday after this.

The 'must use booked train' will only apply to the London to Manchester Piccadilly sector - you will be able to use any train to connect to the airport.
