Growing salad veg
Hi Folks,
We've got an old greenhouse which at the moment is more like a junk room, nothing special, but still usable. I would like to make practical use of it and grow salad veg and maybe a few other bits. I'm a real greenhorn so can anyone give me any tips on what I can grow without to much fuss?
Thanks in anticipation.

There are so many things you could grow!
Tomatoes are easy and lots of types. Peppers are also easy and again a lot of variety.
What do you like to eat?0 -
Hi Annie,
Thanks for your reply. Basically we will try anthing, but for me to grow it needs to be straightforward!! I just feel that as we have a greenhouse it' such a waste not to make use of it. We love salads and like to try different things, so I guess the world is our oyster!!
Are there any particular brands of seeds that are better to buy? Also any good books to recommend? Am really keen and love the thought of eating what we have grown ourselves.0 -
You need this book
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Greenhouse-Gardening-Success-Crowood-Guides/dp/185223976X
It will hold your hand through your first year.
I have tried very expensive seed and cheap seeds...no difference.
Ant tomatoes are a good start, from tiny toms to beef.
I like peppers/chillies and again easy, mine are just about hanging on in, on my kitchen sill and still giving me chillies.
Our current garden is too small for a greenhouse, and I really miss mine.0 -
ohhhhhhhhhhhhh how I would love a greenhouse..
FYI salad leave will grow really really easily in or out of a greenhouse, and are far hardier than people immagine! They survive in pots in sheltered spots all year round in my garden
If i had a greenhouse, I would have easy things like
chilli peppers, mini cucumbers, several types of tomatoes, squash and courgettes as my basics, and build form there
I also grow cherry tomatoes in a variety called tumbling tom in hanging baskets, and usually get load of lovely fruit!

I suggest that you go to the library and borrow a load of books before buying them.
have a look at the old classic by joy larkcom - growing Vegetables i think it is called. She had a long long list of salads that can be grown in an unheated green house or poly tunnel throughout the autumn, winter and spring.
Then grow exotics in the summer - stuff you like. Right now you could grow early peas, beans, salads etc.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
