RAC - do I trust them?

Arranged the price of a policy over the phone.
The RAC person said that it would be x - with a £50 cashback, although I would not get any note of this £50 cashback when the letter came.
Sure enough - details came through the post - no mention of the £50 cashback, so I thought that I'd ring and check before paying.
Spoke to another operative who said £35 cashback had been put on the account. Explained No - £50 and gave the name of the person who gave me the quote.
2nd person said that she could make sure it was added to the acccount and that I would get it back. If I pay today - I will not know whether or not I get this cashback as they only pay when the policy starts.
So as it is more than 14 days from the date in which I need to renew, said that I'd have to wait until the last minute becuase of the the 14 day cancellation period - in other words, if I didn't get my £50 back, I would have to pay to cancel a policy, that I bought on a false basis.
Asked if I could pay by cheque with a letter - told 'no'.
I said that I was very dependable and could I pay £50 of my money after the insurance policy began as a sort of cashforward, and they couold take my word for it - told no.
This is ridiculous - why can't the RAC just send me a written contract of what I am going to get? What do I do....
Do I pay up or not?

I bought RAC car insurance last September and have still not received £50 cashback in spite of two phone call requests with promises of attention
Finally received payment last week.0
