Forgot to say - that I put them at the bottom of loo rolls when starting off peas and beans - it holds the soil in when transplanting them and it all rots down when planted out [when the spring comes and everything gets shifted into the garden].0

Does sharp sand sound about right?
Thanks

Zazen999 - wonderful, I use loo rolls but have had the problem of soil all over the place. Another problem solved by this site.0

Just a thought but we use banana skins to help the roses, they work very wel and we have some lovely flowers. Just cut the skins into 2-3" lengths and scatter round the rose stems. As they rot down, they feed the plants.
Have tried them on Clematis as well and it seemed to work.
Worth a try.Life in the old dog yet?

If you are growing in Sand, it must be sharp sand, not builders sand as this contains salt and other chemicals which will kill the seeds! My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

Thanks for a great tip:T I spent ages yesterday planting my sweetpeas in loo roll tubes and was going mad trying to stop the potting compost falling out. After seeing your advice I re-did the whole lot using your teabag tip and it worked a treat:j As for using tea leaves to start off seeds I had great results with scotch bonnet chilli peppers, and giant sunflower seeds. They shot off big time. I wonder if it's to do with the ph of the damp tea leaves? Once again many thanks for a great tip.Forgot to say - that I put them at the bottom of loo rolls when starting off peas and beans - it holds the soil in when transplanting them and it all rots down when planted out [when the spring comes and everything gets shifted into the garden]."To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill" Sun Tzu0 -
