Carpet or Doors first ?

Which should be replaced first (both need doing) ? Replacing the carpet first and the existing doors may not close with the extra carpet/underlay thickness and then there's the mess of door shavings on a new carpet, but replace the doors first and the new doors may not fit when the carpet is later changed, leading to shaving of new doors on a new carpet. Advice please !

Also, do I just go to B+Q etc to buy doors and choose handles/hinges etc and get someone to fit them or will the fitter provide the hinges ?

Unless you can get a sample of the carpet and underlay for when the doors are fitted, so you know how much to reduce them by, I would have the carpet fitted first. You can buy the doors at B+Q etc, plus the door furniture, etc and fit them yourself. If you are going to ask a joiner to fit them , he may supply the hinges etc at extra cost. You would need to speak to him about it. Also, the joiner should be told you are having new carpets fitted so they will be in a position to best advise ref the door clearance..

why should there be a wood shavings mess on the new carpet? get the man to do it outside or put dust sheets down.
