How long is a piece of string? Look around at the DIY places at tiles you like and then see. 2x 2 = 4 so that is not a lot. But plain white tile could be £3 and nice fancy tile £33 per mtr. It's easy to fix yourself with a bit of advice and a pack of tile spacers.

We are just about to retile our kitchen - we are going to tile over the existing tiles (my dad says that this is the easiest oprion and avoids potential damage to plaster on walls and need to replaster!!)

tilers charge between 20 - 25 per meter

so as this is a small area expect to pay £100 plus tiles
  • I've just had my bathroom retiled. The room is slightly bigger than yours and has an awkwardly shaped dorma area. I paid twice the amount greenoak mentioned and it took the tiler from 8am to 6pm to complete the job. I got the tiler's details by asking a local department store which sells tiles if they have a recommended fitter (though I didn't get the tiles from them and the fitter is independent). The price included the grout (because the tiler didn't like the Wickes grout I had bought and prefered to supply his own at no extra cost than to not get the right finish). I provided the tiles, edging strips, sealant and tile adhesive.

I removed the old tiles myself because otherwise the tiler would have charged another £100. It also meant I got to see the state of the wall and the tiler could check that he was satisfied with it before starting (otherwise I was concerned about extra costs if the tiler took the tiles off and decided the walls needed new plasterboard).

Once the old tiles are off, paint the walls with a watered down PVA adhesive.

Make sure you think about the plumbing. If you want the tiler to deal with this, it will cost more but I think it is worth it. If you are doing it yourself (which I did but wouldn't again, not really being into plumbing), there may be other implications to think about.

Are you going to tile behind the toilet/washbasin if these are on one of the walls to be tiled? Or are you going to tile around them? I removed the cistern and washbasin for the tiler to tile behind. Unfortunately modern tiles are thicker than the old fashioned ones which were there before (presumably form the 70s) so the cistern wouldn't fit back in the same place - the pan had to be brought forward a little (which affects the flooring), then the overflow and the soil pipe (I don't know the technical term) were not in the required place or angle so I had to widen the holes in the walls.

What about the shower? If you have an electric shower, they usually say to tile behind it, not around it (though I know others who have tiled around them). I lifted it enough from the wall to get the old tiles out and enable the tiler to get the tiles behind it.

I got my tiles from B&Q. They were the value ones (large reactangular - I can't remember the actual size) for £7 per square metre. The tiler wasn't impressed with the quality when working with them but agreed that it wouldn't be obvious to anyone once they are fitted. the tiles we had wanted were £13 per square metre but we couldn't afford that and we are happy with the look of the cheaper ones.
