Tap water experiences

usually the people that do that are loaded, but really tight!
I suspect that is the exception rather than the rule...
I've just taken my OH and 2 kids to Harvester using the early bird menu, first time we've eaten out as a family this year (combining 2 birthdays) and we'll probably only do it once or twice more before the end of the year. The kids love the treat (and the salad bar) but we can't afford to pay full price with the budget we have. OH had a jug of water which they didn't charge for. We could have eaten out cheaper by going to McD's but the kids don't get junk food except for a "real treat"...Te audire no possum. Musa sapientum fixa est in aure.0 -
If you're really thirsty, go to this place and have a drink:

I find it amazing that people say we all have to pay for tap water so it is not free to eateries. When they did their business plan surely they included their water rates in the overheads of the business along with gas and electricity. So, we all pay for it whether we drink it or not. Perhaps the next move will be to have an electric meter at each table which could be coin operated. Those wanting a dark romantic even won't have to pay for electricity or the eatery could have a bring you own candle policy.
The profit made on food and drink is astronomical so don't feel sorry for the restaurant owner regarding supplying tap water free of charge he has already been paid for it. Most add a 10% or 12.5% service charge which the staff most probably never see, so most people tip on top of this thus subsidizing the owners already low wage bill.

I was in a restaurant kitchen recently and the amount of water wasted straight down the sink while preparing food was dreadful!! The taps were fully on all the time. Maybe some kitchens should look more carefully at their waste and then they may have a right to charge for water to drink.
I agree that water rates and useage are included in the business overheads and as I mentioned above their use of water could be better in some places.
I have never had a problem with requesting water, as my son doesn't drink squashes or fizzy drinks.
Has anyone aked for water in fast food outlets?? McD's, BK, KFC ???0 -
I'm a bit fed up with all this bottled water is evil stuff that has appeared in the past few weeks.
- My tap water tastes foul - east london - I'm sorry but it does. I don't care what blind tastings were done with thames water. I have had tap water in other places that was ok.

- Why not get a campaign on the fizzy drinks. Full of sugar, chemical sweetners (rumsfeld specials), acid. Just as heavy as water, just as much plastic, can hardly be good for you. Get rid of them, tap water better.0 -

At least when this chemical broth comes in an "ali" can, the container has a residual value:eek:
[Did anyone else hear the woman from Sainsbury today saying they are in a 3 year campaign to get the chemical "day glow" colours taken out of drinks (and all their other products), there are natural alternatives.
At last the food industry is accepting reports that a handful of these commonly used chemicals induce "hyperactivity".
Apparently "lime green" is the most difficult drink and the stuff has had to be re-labelled explaining that the washed out colour is natural. The have given up with canned peas, because nobody is prepared to eat grey peas:rolleyes:].
To get back on thread, I'm a few miles East of you and my water comes out of Hanningfield reservoir. I am reasonably satisfied it is OK after a tour of the place and its space age purification plant. Mind you it needs to be as the feedstock is farm field run off and Chelmsford sewage works. The flavouring is a more complex chemical than simple chlorine, because it has to be active one day in Basildon and a week later in the outlying countryside of Southend.
[Thinks, I wonder what the tens of thousands of new residents being dumped into the Thames Gateway are going to drink].

Cafe Rouge at the Metro Centre had no problem in providing me a tap water free of charge at the weekend. Served with ice and lemon. I got so sick of coke and drink mostly water at home. Thumbs up for them.Love MSE, Las Vegas and chocolate!0

Today I went with family to the Qube Bar and Restaurant at Burntwood Court - Brierley (barnsley).
We each had a few drinks and a sunday dinner and pudding, coming to near on £60 /£70 total.
I then went to the bar to get a glass of tap water and was served a *small* glass (smaller than a half-pint) of tap water for the costly sum of 40p!
I was so dumbfounded (and thirsty) that I actually paid
But was furious straight after...and not wanting to cause a scene on a packed sunday, with lots of kids and families, I thought I'd wait and write a nice letter.
40p for a *small* glass of tap water, near Barnsley, up North.
London tap water is cheaper!
Thats a markup of about 4,000%!
It would have cost about £1.20 for a pint of tap water at the same rate.
I guess *someone* has to pay for their new renovation.0 -
the only place i've had a problem is in chinese buffets, that was until all 20 of us threatened to walk out without paying for the food or drinks we had consumed up to this point. btw the water was perfect:T
has anyone thought about the fizzy drinks!!
in almost all restaurants i've worked in the fizzy drinks are post mix syrups mixed with carbonized TAP WATER!!
also while on the subject a large fast food restaurant charge £1.19 for 500ml coke yet its costs 8p0
