i did post this in the job section but was told it'd be
better here so i have re posted it with a bit of editing!
Hi i started work in a shop "part time" so i was entitled to claim job seekers allowance, however due to some staff going on the sick and some handing their notice in i was getting more hours so i stopped the claim.
i got my new rota for the next four weeks and my hours have been dropped down again to less than 16 (minimum 10 for one week) they wont offer me stable hours, last week i did 50 hours sunday to sunday and the jobcentre have advised me not to try for a new claim unless they can offer me stable hours!
so im wondering what would be the best way to make extra cash?
i was wondering if catalouges would be any good like betterware or kleeneazy? but i have just read the thread about it and it doesn't look too appealing now
i was thinking about avon to but the elderly lady next door said she does it and only has 2 customers.
i'm looking for something that pays i do surveys but they only give vouchers.
can anybody give me some ideas please?
much appreciated

Is it not worth looking for a new job that has set hours and enables you to plan and make an income budget?

Personally I would go for a new job which is more stable. If you take a read of the forum there are lots of ideas for making extra cash on the side from mystery shopping to being an internet researcher0

i would like a full time job anything would do ! it's just that i have found that most work places only offer part time even in factories and it took me 6 month to get a job here when we moved in July, and it's definately not for lack of trying.:starmod:If you dance with the devil, the devil don't change. Hi crystal_fire, there are 2 kinds of opportunities available that offer an income:
1. Direct Selling - popping catalogues through doors (large volumes of them) and collecting later, perhaps people place an order or perhaps not. Examples of this are Avon, Kleeneze, Betterware.
2. Network Marketing - many companies use this as a route to market and it is growing quickly, yet there is a lot of mistrust and misunderstanding about it. A quick explanation is that this involves 4 activities:
a. Using the products yourself -many products offered by such companies are far superior to those available in the shops; you redirect your existing spending on personal care products to those from your own company - how can you talk to anyone about them with passion if you don't use them yourself.
b. You recommend your products to others and aim to create a small customer base of 20 people. Some people baulk at this because they perceive it as 'selling' and yes money does have to change hands here; yet one uses personal recommendation and a money-back guarantee to do so. If people wish to buy, then wonderful - look after them; if not - wonderful.
c. You invite people to take a look at the business opportunity you have; the company you are involved with will reputable, ethical and very successful. Many people are interested in an extra income so there are lots out there to talk to; ultimately this is a 'self selection' business so people have to want to do so. Registering with the company will be free (avoid it if there is a fee) and they require you to buy some products to use to get started. You will have your statutory rights and can send it all back within 14 days - so there is no risk in 'dipping your toe in the water' to test the products.
People who join you look to you for leadership and help, but you won't be alone. You may be in business for yourself, but you are never by your self.
d) You coach people how to do what you do; there is some teaching and training available too. Ultimately the indvidual is responsible for their own personal development.
I cannot comment on the variety of companies out there, though I'm sure many people may have experience of them; I joined what i think is a good company a couple of years ago and stayed with them. One can earn a modest extra income to a large income, it depends what you want.
Hope that helps.Mike0 -
Anyone else think that looks like a sales pitch? Lol0

I'd question the JCs decision to say don't bother making a claim unless you have stable hours. It doesn't sound right to me. If you're only doing 50 hours as a one off or occasionally and you're working >16 hours often or most of the time, then surely you're as entitled to JSA as anyone else who is under 16 hours.
Perhaps ask the CAB for advice too. I used to work part time and would only occasionally go over the 16 hours and so I just had to point out to the JC how many hours I'd gotten and how much I would be paid. Sounds to me like the JC are just being lazy.0 -
yeah get back to JSA and ask them why they don't just adjust your claim for a week or so, cos stopping it will mess up any claim you (should) have for Housing/Council Tax Benefits too.0

Hi
You say it took 6 months to get a job when you moved here in July, had you been living abroad or in a different part of the country? Justtrying to understand where you are coming from.
What work have you done in the past and what interests you? Is there a hobby or interest you have that you could earn money from?
If you were to look into direct selling options look on the direct selling association website, I would also check out forums on the net where there are discussion threads for different companies so you get a feel for the high and low points others experience when selling products.
I have found it useful to consider:
a) The potential customer base, is it limited in anyway? some products have a much narrower customer base than others. How often would people buy eg cards are an ultimate consumable as everyone buys them where as some companies ell products that are more expensive but you only need to use a little at a time therefore won't get as much repeat custom.
b) How many other people in your area are selling those products
c) Where would you sell? Fetes/ Fayres/ Parties/ Offices/ Staff rooms/ on the net/ Some companies will not allow you to sell or advertise on the net.
d) Commission rates - what are they, what are the expectations around achieving commission
e) sales aids - eg brochures/ catalogues, stationery, how much do these cost are there any hidden extras?

sorry i didnt give much info out! i moved from lancashire to county durham, i have worked in 2 shops and factory and process i did the latter for about 6-7 years working in warehouse to machine operator to assembly worker i also gained an nvq in performing manufacturing operations doing this, i am currently at a shop now which is an offlicence. so i havent really got any propper qualifications
i would love to work full time 40 hours a week but all i can find is part time work, i would work 2 part time but it's a) finding something b) fitting it around the job i have now and c) i'm not allowed to work for another comapny that sells what we sell ...according to the hand book we got.
when i was at the job centre signing on they found it hard finding things for me.
i want to apply for Avon rep but i'm hearing mixed reviews about it but i'm not afraid of hard work.
hobbies and interests i love music, reading and cinema going for a quiet meal with OH.
If i had the money i would love a shop of my own to sell music etc:starmod:If you dance with the devil, the devil don't change. The devil changes you:starmod:0 -
