How do I get a new car insurance policy when I'm abroad?

Luckily I'm getting a 5 week holiday, unluckily my car insurance needs renewing two days before I return. Also, unluckily, my car will be parked up for when I get back and so I will need it to drive home.

None of the insurers I've contacted so far will allow me to purchase a policy with a start date more than 4 weeks ahead. I'm not sure I trust using an internet terminal to give financial details from abroad so what can I do?

Any help gratefully received.
Nice to save.

  • You could just renew your insurance now - if you're looking for a better deal with a different company, get the top quote for instant renewal and just cancel your current insurance a few weeks early. You won't get a refund from your current insurer, but you'll be covered for your return from holiday.

Alternatively, you can phone from abroad if you don't trust the internet.

Have you thought about giving all the information to a trusted family member or friend to do it for you.
You could ask them to text you to confirm for peace of mind.

Obviously make sure it's not someone that will run off with your credit cards, but you musy have a brother, sister or friend that you trust?
  • Also check to see whether your current policy is on an auto renew - you almost certainly wont get the best deal by staying with the same insurer instead of shopping around, but it would solve your problem

  • Thanks,

I think I'll follow up lisyloo's idea. Bit concerned about the legality of someone else buying an insurance policy on my behalf but I guess no-one would know if it is all done on-line :)

    Thanks for everyone's help.

if you still want to shop around for the new policy when you get back try the link to arrange temporary cover for 1 or 2 days,

It can only be booked 30 days in advance but as lisyloo said you can get a pal to arrange it at a cost of apx £10 per day,

they will send him a policy note by email that he can print off and fax to you abroad so that you have it in the car with you on your return

  • I would be tempted to just renew your current insurance. Are they able to give you a quote in advance?
