Is it based on the same "basket of cheese and plasma tellies" though? EU CPI is around 1% higher than ours and the pound has fallen over 10% against the euro over the last year. Are we comparing ebay cheese (UK) with Harrod's cheese (EU)?

What you say is true in some respects and there is a lot of discussion about 'hedonics' when measuring inflation figures.

If you're trying to measure changing prices, what really matters is you compare like with like - how much is eBay cheese this year compared to last rather than how much was Harrods cheese this year, oh look eBay cheese is much less than that this year.

My understanding of how it works is that as the UK consumer buys a lot of 'eBay cheese' and very little 'Harrods cheese', price changes in the former will have a much bigger impact on inflation/deflation. The French who I assume buy much more Harrods cheese ('arrods sheeeze?) would find changes in the price of that to have a greater impact on their inflation rate.

The biggest problem comes when you try to measure the effects on inflation on changes in the price and quality of things. In 1969, the guys at Nasa would have been amazed by the sort of computer that today is so outdated you couldn't sell it. It would have cost them millions but to us has approximately nil value.

Our basket has been fiddled with a lot using discounts and imports, but all is about to change.

With the pound tanking (due to rampant inflation) all our imports get more expensive...
I had a great day tramping (well...tottering in exciting heels....last seasons too) around a trade fair (in a glossy, fashiony kind of way) and, as quota restrictions are being lifted this year in our sector, smart Chinese are selling over here now.....though giving branded suppliers the hump..

This means I can source direct.:D I can avoid the costs put on by the middlemen.

I bought some amazing frocks today (silk, lined, gorgeous) and they felt like Reiss / K.Millen quuality; retailing @ £165.)
They cost £16 (nope! got a discount of £1.50 per frock for a volume order; 12 per style instead of 6).
    All freight costs included too.

So, do I retail these at a standard mark up?

I would usually retail product at approx X 3.5 (£15 cost price sells at £55).

Not these frocks...they will retail @ £75 and will still be better value than my corporate, High St clone competitors.:D

So I am going to keep the extra margin and not sell at an even lower price.

Was nice to deal directly with the factory owner too (plus his wife, mum, dad and kids who were all on the stand).

How much longer can I keep all this ducking and diving up???

Absolutely! They are SOOOO nice too) arriving end April! But we won't registerthe sale with Gordon...don't want to affect the inflation figures!

PS; we clear our write-offs at a boot fair twice a year @ £2 per item (or 3 for fiver!). Some of this would have been on our RPI list!.....£80 coats for 2 quid (and some still offer a pound:eek: ) thats price deflation.:D

Is it me or have this just turned into Trinny and Suzanna?
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.
