If anyone else is looking for an idea to keep kids entertained I did see on a wedding forum the idea of giving kids digital camera and a list of challenges of things to find (e.g. a lady wearing a hat, a big cake..) etc. Not sure how well it'd go down, but could be an option?!
That's a great idea, might well do this at my 10th anniversary to keep my two occupied ...

  • hi rachel I think thats a good idea, something to keep them quiet like a little quiz, colouring book, sweets/juice, bubbles etc. Or hire a clown or magician for an hour while the speeches are on and get them out of the way!

  • I think people are being a bit harsh on the 'child-free' wedding people.

I'm getting married this summer, and the only children invited are my (four) step-children-to-be, who I want to be centre of attention, and my niece and nephew, both under 3, who I wouldn't dream of not inviting. I don't know the other people's children, it's an afternoon/evening do, and it's costing enough to invite all the people we want to invite without including loads of kids, too.

I know this will sound harsh to some people, but it's based on good reasoning.

I went to a wedding recently which was full of children and they hired an entertainer (think he did things with balloons and tricks) to do a session, in a separate room, while the speeches were taking place. This worked really well and meant the children could be a part of the whole day, but not 'disrupt' any speeches.

Rachel the photo treasurehunt is a great idea for the evening and Ive seen it done many many times!

Give each of the older kids (prob about 8, but younger ones can be paired up) a disposable camera and a list of photos they must take. Explain that the person they are taking the photo of must know about the picture (encourages them to talk to people) and must be posing.

    Things like:

    A lady in a hat
    A lady wearing pink
A man called John (this depends on your guest list obviously!)
At least 2 of the bridesmaids / groomsmen
A couple who have been married for over 25 years (once again depends on your guest list).

But have a look who youve got coming, and see if they have something interesting that the kids have to go find out!

Give each child a certificate at the end of the night, then send a small prize the the winner after the pics have been printed.

Dont bother with Confetti's cameras - we had them and they were rubbish - didn't get one picture worth keeping off 10 cameras.

When my sister got married, she had her two kids christened in the same ceremony (there's moneysaving for you lol). We all had tea and cakes in the church hall afterwards, with punch and judy laid on for the kids (much to the confusion of the guests who had come over from abroad) and then there was a break before an adult-only evening reception. Some of us shared babysitters and it worked really well. Best of both worlds, imho.

Or maybe you could not have an evening do but have the kids there in the afternoon, if cost is an issue - which is what we did and several friends of ours have done.

Advice to any mum - no matter what your outfit looks like - take a large handbag - Yu gi oh cards for the photo bit - kept every child over 4 quiet, sweets for the church service - and 2 fully charged mobiles to play silent games on during the speeches!!!!
