  • As it does mine. I did say occasional good rates.

The two accounts I nabbed at 7% and 7.5% are no longer available, and I'm certainly not putting any new money their way.

If correct, I suspect that the owners of the aforesaid will be mugged if recent history is anything to go by.

As mentioned before, a benefit of having many bs accounts set up was in making it easier to satisfy I.D. requirements as existing customer/member or, occasionally, where existing membership allowed you to benefit from better products (presumably because B/socs were looking for extra cash but not extra customers) I was amused when Bucks (1 branch) referred in their annual newsletter to a 35% increase in membership in one year!

    Carpetbagging is dead.

Every building society that paid windfalls and converted into a bank failed financially, so it is very unlikely that anyone would follow that utterly bankrupt business model again.

As well as that, in the last few years the Derbyshire, Cheshire, Dunfermline, Chelsea, Barnsley, Norwich and Peterborough, Scarborough, Stroud and Swindon, and Chesham have all merged with - i.e. have been rescued by - other building societies, and Britannia was taken over by Co-operative Bank, and not a penny in windfalls has been paid in any of these cases.
