Lloyds Tsb Charge You For Using Your Debit Card!

Last November we bought some Euros from the Post Office with our Debit Card - Lloyds TSB charged us for the privilege. We complained and they apologised saying it was a mistake and reimbursed us. Last week I bought some currency from Travelex with my Debit Card and guess what?.... Lloyds charged us. When I complained they said that their terms and conditions entitled them to do so. So, take YOUR money out in cash and do what you like - fine....use the card to pay for currency (your money, don't forget) OH NO THAT MEANS THEY CHARGE YOU! On the day I bought my US Dollars Lloyds were quoting a rate of $1.85/£.... Travelex $1.94/£. Who in their right mind would buy from Lloyds? I gave the Bank an ultimatum...cancel the charge or I close my account. Oh the Manager is busy so we will phone you. Did I get a call? Don't be silly. Tomorrow I will be taking steps to move my account. I wish them all they deserve.

  • Having also been caught out like this in the past, I always now draw out my money from the cashpoint and hand it over at the counter.

Yes it is in the terms and conditions. Yes it always has been. It is on the updated charges leaflet every customer was sent at the end of last year. They are also on the internet and available in every branch. If they change you are sent a notice of variation.

I work for Lloyds tsb (by no means is what I say a professional opinion it is just my personal opinion), what you have asked for (IE: remove the charge) cannot happen. You have signed the terms and conditions, they are available for you to view at any time, and what you are actually asking for is the branch manager to go against all of the rules.

You should have had a call, I agree, but you should not recieve a refund.
Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.

  • Maybe I should have read all the dross the Bank sends out but it still doesn't alter the fact that they are charging for no other reason than to make money out of the clients...they have not provided any service but they make a charge...ridiculous. Can't be bothered having to deal with usurers.
  • I do hope then that you did not use your debit card abroad when on holiday as they charge a fee of £1 per transaction on top of the 2.75% charge.

Why wait from then to now before venting your feelings?

It may have been your money but you were using THEIR card and therefore should observe the Terms and conditions (or dross if you prefer) like everybody else.

This is MSE remember ejones999 - the place where people moan and whinge when they didn't read the terms conditions....and then when someone mentions it they have the nerve to say "maybe I should have read all the dross the bank sends out"!

Sort of renders your moaning totally invalid that does.

Feel free to change your bank....you'll only be caught out again as quite evidently you won't..........

Read all the dross the bank sends out!

and believe me, when you open a new account, there will be plenty of it!

Then you did it wrong. You should have first taken the cash out over the counter - at the Post Office, yes, it can be done, free - and then used it to pay for the euros. If the Post Office clerk had been awake (or maybe if you hadn't insisted on doing it that way) that's how it should happened.

And you'll find that a large proportion of other banks do it exactly the same way so unless you do a bit of research first you'll land up in exactly the same situation again.

I don't use any card abroad that charges. Not sure what you mean by waiting from then 'til now.......You missed the point that having once been told that it was a mistake it came as a surprise when the second time around they start quoting T & C. OK I should spend half my life reading T & C's but it doesn't alter the fact that they seek to charge for a non-existent service.
  • Thanks DZUG... a constructive observation.

Rubbish. They ARE providing a service. They are looking after your money, which costs them. They are giving it back to you, which costs them.

OK they offset those costs by lending the money out at interest but that doesn't have to mean that there are not things they can quite legitimately charge you for.
  • Rubbish you say. So tell me why I can purchase all manner of things with my Debit Card without charge but if I buy currency then it should be considered OK for them to charge. Don't quote the T & C's, I'm asking from a moral point of view as there is no more cost to them to release my funds for buying cash as there is for a pound of bananas. Ignore the T & C's for a moment and just ask yourself if you really think it is an equitable charge.
