My Netgear DG834GT has been fantastic! Got 2 PC's wireless and 2 laptops wireless! Has never cut out (touch wood) since ive upgraded the fireware. Great rane too, works in garden and attic.
Keep away from theire techy support tho! Pants!0 -
I've had the Buffalo for a couple of years and the performance was very good. The only thing which really annoyed me was the fact that the web interface was really poorly laid out.
I am a networking specialist and couldnt figure out how to do really basic things like port forwarding etc. Never had a problem with Linksys/Belkin interfaces.
If you want basic functionality then this is a good price.0 -
Ive just bought this one : Netgear MR8914 Wireless Broadband Router from ebay. Allows 1 pc to connect wireless and 1 wired. Paid just under £30 4 it inc vat & p+p. Comes brand new and with a usb adaptor. Did i get a good deal?0

All this stuff confuses me...I have a desktop with an adsl modem already and a laptop that has built in wireless capability (on several different standards - defenately g and I think one of the others too). I want a router that I can wire to my pc so I don't have to buy a seperate wireless card for that and that will then connect to the laptop wireless.
Do i have to a) buy one that is a built in adsl modem - are there some that are just wireless network routers? and b) I have heard of people having problems with routers with built in firewalls - I already have NIS and play lots of online games so don't want to buy somethign that will prevent me from connecting to online gaming servers. Can anyone recommend something suitable - that will allow me as much control over the firewall situation as possible?
oh..and of course...cheap0 -
heres a question i hope someone can answer..
i've only got one laptop in the house but i want to make it wireless so i can enjoy the sunshine and surf at the same time!... im on cable!.
can i set up a wireless connection with just one laptop? and if so, how? (no other pc's either) coz sum1 told me u have to plug the router into at least one pc or laptop!! which wud be pointless for me then lol0 -
To make your pc/laptop work wireless you need to buy a ADSL wireless router. Most come with 4 wired ports to save buying wireless cards for all devices. having used d-link, usr and linksys my preference is the Linksys WAG54G as you can view who is using your wireless connections very easily. All support encryption to stop other people stealing your broadband connection
The wirless card in your laptop connects to the router wich then connects to the internet which allows WWW, e-mail etc.. This means the pc does not need to be turned on to allow the laptop, xbox to connect.
To enable things like e-mule, online gaming through the router you normally need to setup port forwarding in the configuration screen on the router.

If you are on cable you do not want an ADSL router. A normal wireless router should be fine.[size=-2] If this post was unhelpful, please tell me.

Havent set up a wireless connection myself but found from friends that most cheaper kits are ok only if u know how to set them up.
I presume if u dont get a router with build in modem them it would mean having the pc with the modem switched on all the time inorder for other wireless pc/laptops to access the internet?
Also if u got blueyonder cable, telewest dont allow u to share ur internet connection but i,m sure there are ways around that ( i thk one way is to get them to install an internal modem). Any suggestions on good cheap routers with wired &wireless access for blueyonder cable?0 -
I've got this router and it works fine. Much better than my old Dlink kit. Mine cost more than this and came with a free wifi USB thing. Never had a problem with it.In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.
