should I take it back purchased 28th Jan exp Feb 2008 and didn't know

Hi,

On the 28th Jan we purchased from tescos pharmacy pepto-bismol tablets as we are going away soon. My partner went to use them this morning only to find the expiry date to be Feb 2008. The box is still sealed and I have the receipt should I take them back? I don't know where I stand as they where in date only by a few days when got them.

If they expire end of Feb 08 then you've got a while to get through them.

It'll be the end of Feb 2008. So it depends on how many are in the container and how frequently you need to take them.

In the past when I have got them they have always had a long shelf life. I will be away at the end of Feb into march which was what I got them for, i would have to buy a new pack to take with me.

It's one of them things we keep in so no need to use them. I am going away and am not a good traveller as I always get an upset stomach and these sort it.

Whenever i've went to the chemist for a prescription, and something has had a relatively short date on it (up to 3 months even) the pharmacist has written the date on the box of medication, just so we remember when it's going out of date.

It's never happened with anything i've bought over the counter though. The pharmacy hadn't sold you anything that was out of date so i'm not sure they'll do anything. As others have said, it'll probably be the end of Feb that the expiry date is.

You could go back and say you bought them for a trip you're going on in March, and you never noticed that they'll be out of date by then. You might be lucky and they'll swap them.
  • come on it's not foodstuff and not magically going to kill you come midnight on the 29th Feb. Depending on what they are exactly they're probably mainly chalk or similar and aren't going to go 'off' for 100 years or so.

I agree. If you're only going on your trip till the middle of March, they'll be fine. They won't go off overnight, just because the box says has a date printed on it. They have to give themselves a bit of leeway.
  • Just to add though I would not use any medication past an expiry date

    Storage Conditions / Expiry Date
    - Any special storage conditions will be stated on the label. If you do not follow these your medicine may become less effective
    - Every medicine will state an expiry date. If you use the medicine after this date you may not be getting the full benefit of the medicine as the manufacturer is no longer guaranteeing quality after this date.

For the sake of a few days, it's really not going to matter.

Presumably, you would take the medicine on 29 Feb. But you wouldn't take it on 1 March or even a week later? It's really not going to go "off" overnight.

They have to have some leeway. If they didn't, there would be a chance that it could go off on 28 Feb or earlier.
