This is the one I used when I first made a white sauce(I'm new to cooking from scratch!). But quite quickly you learn to do it by just chucking everything in!December GC £23.43/120 :T

I got a huge pack of whoopsied mince yesterday so I'm going to make a big lasagne, I have chopped toms, garlic, onions, herbs etc for the red sauce but I have never made the White sauce from scratch. I was thinking it would just be a butter/flour/milk White sauce would this be right and would there be any interesting variations to make it a bit more exciting. Would I add cheese to the sauce or just on the top of the lasagne? Thanks in advance xx0

Yep you're right it's just a regular white sauce (e.g. http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/all-in-one-white-sauce.html).
I normally just put cheese on top of the lasagne but it's totally up to you0 -
I always put English mustard in my white sauce and plenty of white pepper.0

Ooh yum! I don't eat beef but use veggie mince or just chopped veg in my lasagne. My mum cooks her white sauce and adds cheddar cheese so the wohle thing is pretty cheesy...yummy with or without cheese. English mustard is also nice in the sauce.
I picked up a tip from a weekend cookery programme to warm your milk before adding to the sauce...apparently it helps to stop it going lumpy...I always use a whisk as well to keep it lump free! Teflon preferably though to stop scratching up my pans!!
Oh and my mum also adds celery salt to her sauce?!! :j Good luck with the lasagne...makes me feel hungry!!Married in 2016. Bought our first home in 2017. Expecting our first baby in November 2017
Frugal & thrifty as much as possible.0 -
Hi sue,
I always add grated cheese and a dash of English mustard to mine.

I've no plain flour left and want to attempt a fish pie for my little girl (I hate fish!!). Can I use plain instead? I haven't got any cornflour either.
Thanks

I use SR too if I have run out of plain - there is very little difference in result as you are not using the flour as a raising agent but to bind the fat to the liquid!0
