Relief Road planned to take some Garden and apply Residents parking

Didn't know where to put this but there are plans to build an inner relief road through what is now a car park at the end of my garden. My garden seems to be the only house on my actual street that will be affected by it. They will take the tip of my garden. I don't really know what to do about getting any kind of compensation and what kind to go for and if I'll get any at all.
I've had some solicitors letters posted to me even though I haven't requested any asking me to get in touch but can I do this on my own? I don't really know where to start.
I did have a letter from the council about a year ago but nothing was mentioned about the land I will lose. I don't know when its going to actually be completed but the council are now sorting out residents parking on our street because the car park will be gone when it does. I'm against the residents parking because we do not need it.
