Old Boiler system to Combi Boiler

Options
I've recently moved into my flat and one of the things that came up in my survey was that the boiler was dated. So I've been looking to replace it - not just because its old, but because the hot water tank sits in my kitchen (preventing me from putting anything perishable in the cupboards near to the tank), taking up alot of space, which I'd rather have for a kitchen work top and storage. Add to that, that the timer for the boiler doesn't actually work, its broken and has been bypassed by a switch wired next to it - so its all on, or all off.

My flat is pretty warm with the heating off but obviously I still need hot water and I don't get that option with my current setup. So getting a combi installed to remove the hot water tank and some other tank above it (not the cold water tank, that sits above the boiler), as well as allowing me to switch between CH and HW - makes sense!

I got one quote from a local corgi registered central heating specialist, but the quote is so basic its hard to tell if its a fair one! All I got in the quote was the boiler type (Worcester Junior 28i), new digital programmer to be installed and that the old boiler would be removed. Sadly I wasn't there when they came to check my flat out, my OH let them in. But the new boiler will go pretty much where the exisiting one is (a little higher up on the wall). They didn't mention and didn't look at my hot water tank - is it standard to remove the tank when fitting a combi boiler? Do they also remove the cold water tank as well?

Anyway, the quote came to £2300 - which I thought was abit high. Alright I do live in the NE of Scotland but I still thought it was a tad steep! I mean the boiler is £700, so what on earth makes up the rest of it? I'm pretty sure the raditors are new with the newer (thin) copper pipes fitted. I've got Southern Electric (Scottish Hydro) coming to give me a quote and I will get the other local corgi registered plumber to give me a quote too but can anyone here give me a rough estimate at what all this should cost and if removing old tanks is standard for fitting a combi or do I have to specify all that?
Faith is believing what you know ain't so...

  • Thats seems really expensive!

We had 2 quotes when our ancient boiler broke down in September. One was £1565 and the other £1200
That included, removing and isolating all pipes related to old HUGE tank upstairs, installation of new boiler downstairs in the corner of the dining room and installing a remote timer/controller.
There was a hell of a lot of work involved as the pipes etc had to be rerouted etc. The boiler cost £725 and the rest was labour and materials.

I live in the NW of England

I'd recommend definitely getting more quotes - try word of mouth recommendations

    I hope this helps?
  • Good evening: Excellent advice is available on this recent thread...http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=723881

More quotes are in order: request written, full specification quotes and compare like for like.
