Closing accounts on MSE

I was astonished to find out that it's not possible to do this, I'm just curious why not? Surely I have a right to close my account if I want to?

    Just don't use the account anymore....that's the way most forums that I've been on work. You can always delete your posts too if you don't want anyone to read them.

    Log out and your account cannot be used by anyone else.

    I'm sure if it was required a member of the borad admin could remove the account.
