Brand New PS2 disc problem

Hi

My son got the new Stars Wars game a couplt of days ago and has been treating it with kid gloves. It was working fine but today just seams to be making some clicking and whirring noises and nothing else happens.

The PS2 seams fine with his other discs and there is nothing visible wrong with the disc. I know the shops are funny about returning these games so has anybody got any ideas what the problem might be.

As you can imagine my son is inconsolable.

Normally I would say that your PS2 needs a new laser unit or the use of a lens cleaner disc but you state that it's playing other games just fine.

The clicking you can hear is the laser lens unit moving the laser closer to the disk to try and read it and when it can't it will spin the disc. If your sure that your sons PS2 is playing all other games (DVD and CD) fine and there is no damage to the disk then it could be a bad run on the disc from the factory. I would suggest you first try the game in another PS2 and if still giving problems take it back to the shop and ask them to test it whilst your there. If they can see that there is no damage to the disc and it is still giving problems they will more than likely replace it, but don't expect a refund.

If you find that the game works in another PS2 then you must consider what i said initially.

I was thinking about getting my son to try the game in his friends PS2 tomorrow and his PS2 is playing all of his other games.

If it is the disc my only problem is that we got it from a supermarket and I am not sure on their policy on exchanging.

Ill see how it goes tomorrow on his friends machine.

all shops should have a like for like exchange system.
its not uncommon for "new" games to have protection and advanced features, they may not be read properly by older PS2 machines.

How old is your son's PS2?

My son's PS2 is just under 1 year old.

I popped into the Local GAME store to ask their opinion and he very kindly said he would swap the disc . He also told me that some PS2s don't like purple bottomed discs which is what the Lego Star Wars game is. I did ask if it came with the normal bottom and he said no.

Why do these companies do this. Is this just a ploy so that us parents get nagged into buying another new Sony Playstation console.

Anyway the new disc seams to work ok for now, just as the other one did, but it may stop again. If it does I will be writing an email to Sony to have good moan.
