I am looking for a house within walking distance (say 1.5 miles) from Bristol Temple Meads station. My criteria are:
-- House: probably 3 bedrooms.
-- Reasonably quiet area (away from main road).
-- Max: £185K
I have seen areas (on the net) such as Knowle, Bedminster, Totterdown etc.
Can anyone give me any suggestions as I do not know Bristol at all.
Thanks, Tx

There are 'rough' parts of Knowle, Bedminster and Totterdown. Totterdown is by far the better of the three (then Knowle, then Bedminster).
If the house looks cheap for what it is then it is probably in the rougher part of the area.
Places to avoid include Hartcliffe and Withywood.
I would strongly recommend you rent for say a year when house prices may drop (or at least stay the same). That way you could get to know the area better.
If you find a house you are considering buying, let me know the name of the road and I will tell you if the area is OK.There is always light within the dark0 -
yep i agree the only one of those i'd even consider living in is totterdown!!
i wouldnt go anywhere near knowle-particularly knowle west or hartcliffe.
i live in bristol too so feel free to pm me if you want to ask any questions etc.0 -
Thanks for the response - appreciated. I am basically looking for a house within walking distance of Bristol Temple Meads station - preferably a bit south as I might be getting a job a few miles south of town.
I find it a bit difficult to tell whether the houses are cheap or not as I am unfamiliar with prices in Bristol. From what I can see it is possible to buy a nice looking 3 bed house (from the internet photo) from between £160 to £190 in the areas mentioned.
Could you recommend any other areas near to the station which might be slightly better?
Thanks, Tx0 -
Parts of brislington and st annes park(a new estate) are both nice but possibly a bit too far as i would say about 2/3 miles away from temple meads.
when looking at houses around the knowle area beware of them being advertised as knowle/knowle park, because quite often they are knowle west....which is a truely terrible area and they are advertised as such as people are desperate to sell and get out0 -
I am travelling to Bristol tomorrow. Hopefully I will have a time to look around at the housing near Temple Meads!0

Why not go for a house on the Severn beach railway line? Redland, Montpelier, Clifton Down and Stapleton Road are all (in different ways) good places to live, and you can get the train down to temple meads.
Just an idea.0 -
Totterdown isn't that great as it is next door to Knowle West! I think Bedminster/Windmill Hill are better, of course Southville is the best place but a bit pricey. I'd recommend the Ashton Gate end of Southville or places in Bedminster that are near North Street/East Street - only a 15-20 min walk to Temple Meads.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

Hi All, I've read the threads that have been previously posted and I can't agree with what has been reported about Knowle. What's been posted in not an accurate picture of the area.
Knowle west is as some have described a little rough. However Upper Knowle is completely different. I should know as I live there! A lot of the opinions that have been expressed are by people who hear the name assume that the whole area is the same.
Totter down and Knowle has an increasingly diverse community. Unlike some parts of Bristol house prices are stable if not increasing. This is largely down to the fact that a new shopping development and arts centre is being built next to Temple Meads Station. As well as this there are two TV production companies in the area with plans for expansion.
Over the last few years several new restaurants have arrived in the area. Also with its only a few miles form Bristol airport (15 minutes by car, 20 minutes by bus) with its increasing list of new destinations. New York direct has just been added.
As for house prices, well we bought our place after living in Redland for two years. The 2 bed flat (in good condition) that we were living in was shortly sold for £140K. We bought a 4 bed house in Knowle for £135K.
Four years later the flat is worth around £225k whilst the house is worth £275K. A slightly smaller house opposite ours was sold for asking price £230K in two days. Also this place was bough four years ago for just over £110k three years ago.
So far from being a rough area Upper Knowle is an up and coming area. The area is quiet and very friendly where you actually chat with your neighbours. Unlike some more expensive and snooty areas of Bristol. The houses are largely Victorian terraces with large rooms that still have their Victorian features.
Don’t be put off have a look for youself.

I agree, Im living in Bath, but have lived in Bristol. It is definately worth coming down to rent for a little while first to get used to the area, there is a lot, and by driving around you will get to know which areas seem like your cup of tea. Parts of Redland are very studenty however, so if you dont want them as neighbours, id check who potential neighbours are very carefully!
