Ideas for days out, around 1/2 hours' drive from Huddersfield

Hello,

I'm looking for ideas for days out, within 1 or 2 hours' drive from Huddersfield.
We like castles/historical places, easy-ish walks, museums, fun parks, etc.

Eureka! in Halifax for the kids and The Deep in Hull. I think you can use Tesco vouchers for both places.

Then the National Railway Museum in York which is free. And the rest of the stuff in York - The Minister, Castle Museum etc.

  • I would not recommend Eureka. It is in a bad need of overhaul and though we paid through Tesco vouchers, it felt like a poor show. Children were not impressed either.
Manchester Museum of Science and Industry in Castlefield is excellent, free (except special exhibitions) and not too far from your place. I would however suggest you take the train, particularly if you own a family railcard.
York is excellent, with lots to see and do. National Railway Museum is free and worth visiting and spending a few hours.

We went to Magna, a science museum near Sheffield, some time ago, and what a waste of money! I know they were still recovering from the summer floods, but then they should have reduced the price, because part of the things weren't accessible.

I forgot to say that you don't need to mention York, because we've lived there for quite a while and have seen everything there.
    Also, it doesn't involve children.

2 hours from Huddersfield covers a huge area. South of Birmingham, East Coast, West Coast, North Wales, Lakes. That's a lot of scope for a day out and no excuse to be bored!

Just a few things which spring to mind:

The Yorkshire Dales, The Peak District, east and west coast beaches, Blackpool, numerous heritage railways, Mining Museum near Wakefield, Harewood House, Thackeray Medical Museum, Media Museum and IMAX, Bronte Country, Ilkley, Alton Towers, Lightwater Valley, Flamingo Land, Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire Moors, Eden Camp, Elvington Air Museum.

We enjoy Cannon Hall Farm which is near Gawthorpe nr Barnsley. Great for a half day or a full day in summer if you take a picnic and some cricket bats and stumps and a football. there is a website but I don't know how to put it here.

We enjoyed Camp Eden in Harrogate (WW2 prison camp converted into a museum) It is a FULL day out to see everything. We went last year, got there at about 11am and didn't leave until about 5pm

Also try the National Media Museum in Bradford.

  • St Leonards Farm in Esholt is a nice day out.

Walk round the farm and feed the animals then burn off some energy in the fun barn (adults can play on the equipment too!)

Leeds Royal Armouries is quite good for an hour or two- free entry so doesn't matter how long you stay! when a bit warmer they reenact battles and jousting outside. still have a few reenactments inside in winter though
