Aw how lovely of you all :grouphug:

Just opened a 0% balance transfer for my credit card. Not lots on it but will cut out interest payments for next year or so. Will cut up card as soon as it arrives! Not much on it really but don't need it. Then can close old credit card account:T

Spoke to loan people as well. They gave me a settlement figure for my loan, and I have a number to call back. The lady I spoke to did a provisional check and said I could cut £30 a month off what I'm paying now if I redid my application, but I'm not making any hasty decisions straightaway, I've been having a look around online to see what deals I can get. Also requested a printed statement so I can see it in black and white. I'd like to reduce the monthly payments if I could but ultimately thinking for the life of the loan, it would be more prudent to pay off as much as I can afford per month and reduce the term of the loan. I think there's five years left on £6000, I'm paying £154 per month which is a lot for what I have coming in now.

A plus point of being made redundant is that I am now looking at jobs with much higher salaries, both with a view to furthering myself careerwise and also to open doors as regards potentially applying for a mortgage in the future. The thing is, I do really want to get on the property ladder soon, but I'm realistic about paying off my debts first and settling into a new job, so I can start to put some money aside for a deposit.

I feel really productive today, and it's been great to pop back in and see all these lovely messages! So thank you to all of you :T

Sorry you have been having a crappy time - hope things get a lot better for you soon, and I hope the landlord is sympathetic. xxx

    Hi Jo,

Here's some more hugs for you.... as a single parent too I know how tough and tight things can be.

Well done for doing the bits you've done so far. You sound very motivated now.

I agree, it's not fair your ex isn't helping to pay towards the loan plus not paying maintenance. Is he looking for work? Would he co-operate once he's working?

My biggest downfall is food shopping and running my car!

Hope you get things straight soon xx

From what me and him have spoke about, I think he would co-operate once he gets a job. I know he's looking, he has been for a few months now and is getting rather disheartened as he has applied for many jobs, been for a few interviews but is not getting past that stage.

I'd say he'd sort the money side of things out when he does get a job. I mean, there's no guarantees but I don't think he's the kind of person to shirk that once he is working.

I will have to ask him for a contribution towards the loan. I'm not sure what's fair; like I said the majority of the funds went to paying off his debts, but tbh just to get half of what I'm paying would be good enough, any more would be a bonus at this point.

That's good then, if it's amicable hopefully you can come to some arrangement where he pays maintenance and something towards the loan.

It must be disheartening applying for jobs and not getting anywhere, fingers crossed something will come up for him.

Yep he seemed a lot brighter today as he's got an interview for a job within walking distance of his house, it isn't what he studied for but it's a full-time admin role on okay money so he's pleased about that, and another potential job which he has had his cv forwarded to and is waiting to hear from.

I've got to phone my landlord today about the rent. My parents can lend me the majority of the money but am about £70 short so am going to have to speak to landlord to ask if I can pay on Friday when my money comes into my account. Never had any problems with paying since moving in a year and a half ago so am hoping it should all be okay.

I want to do it asap to get it over with but I also keep putting it off... The sooner I do it the sooner it's done though!

Left a message as he didn't answer his mobile. Waiting for him to call back to let me know if okay. Hope it is!

  • You sound really positive and are obviously making lots of right moves. From your first post it sounds like you have been on here before -so you have a lot of info at your finger-tips, eh? Very inspiring. xxxx
