Ford remote reprogramming

The battery in my Mk.2 Mondeo's Ford 3-button radio remote control keyfob ran out and has been replaced. Therefore, the keyfob evidently needs to be re-programmed back into the car's security system.
I've found the instructions online. I've turned the ignition on and off four times in three seconds, which puts the security system into learning mode, and the LED stays on, for 20 seconds. During this time, you push a button on the remote, and the LED flashes to confirm that the code has been learned. So far so good, except that the remote key still doesn't work.
Any ideas?

I had to input the post halfway through - I do work every now and again!
To switch the system into learning mode, you switch the ignition on and off again four times in three seconds and the LED illuminates continuously. This bit seems to work as the instructions. The Mk.2 Mondy doesn't have any audible confirmation of alarm setting, status, etc.
PS. I got some of those deliberately dripping candles from one of those "gadget" shop places. You know, the ones with battery operated aeroplanes flying around the security cameras and battery-operated pigs wandering around the floor. Use in a Mateus Rosé bottle (the only wine where the bottle is worth more than the contents) to complete that authentic romantic restaurant dining experience!

I have some of them JP wonky bottles for my candles when I eventually get them!0
