gas oven not getting hot enough

It is an oldcooker, but a good one. All the rings are fine, as is the grill, and up until yesterday the oven was fine too.

Now when I light it, it ignites, but won't increase beyond the ignition low flame. I've checked the knob, which is functioning fine, I've checked the jets, which seem clear, nand I've run the hhoover over them, just in case of mucky bits.

I've a lovely joint of ham, which we we were really looking forward to, so any advice will be gratefully received.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Sounds like the thermocouple has gone, (or the gas valve), hence the gas valve is not opening

  • I've got a relatively new cooker (according to my landlord who provides it) and yet it takes around 20 minutes - yes 20 minutes to do cheese on toast!!!

The oven I think is just as bad, gas mark 8 or 9 will cook a roast dinner in about 2.5 hours (there's only the two of us so the meat is never large). I complained because I don't think it works properly but after sending his contractor round to check it he thinks nothing is wrong. He just said it was because I was used to fan assist cookers.

I realise I need to pre-heat the oven but I normally have to pre-heat for around 30 minutes, no heat is escaping and I never smell gas (unless I want to ha ha [joke]) but I don't understand why this cooker takes so darn long to cook things. There's a separate grill which is gas but 20 minutes for cheese on toast is a joke. I could cook it quicker than that with my zippo!

Does this mean my cooker may have the same problem? When I light the cooker I get a massive raging flame until it dies down to what I imagine will be correct temperature?

Thank you Derrick. Is this an expensive fix? The cooker is very old, I'll replace if it's gonna cost a bomb.

Well it could be as you will need a Corgi engineer to look at it, if it is very old the parts might not even be available. As to the actual cost I would have no idea, maybe you could ring a couple of local Corgis and ask them for a rough idea over the phone, or maybe they will do a free estimate.

  • It's not the thermocouple.

The liquid expansion FSD is faulty, easy enough to fix if you can get the bit. Contact the manufacturers of the cooker and find a corgi engineer who is qualified to work on cookers :)
