Recommendations for Youth Hostels abroad

I'm after some recommendations for youth hostels abroad. I would like France, Spain or Italy - Italy is definitely the first choice.
I would need a family room for myself and son . The worst thing is because of work and school it would have to be August - the most expensive month of the year.
I've looked at youth hostels and villas until my eyes are falling out but would really prefer to go by recommendation - we've winged it in this country but don't want to do that abroad.
My son is 6 so am looking for areas suitable for children and as I don't drive somewhere accessible by public transport and not a million miles from the airport - if it on a cheap airline route even better.
Any stories of places you would recommend or alternatively places to avoid like the plague.
Thanks in advance for any help. Misty

you could try looking at www.hostel.com or www.hostelworld.com and reading the reviews. Do you have anywhere in particular in mind? if you can give us a few possibilities then maybe we can recommend places to stay.0

thanks for the links - I'll have a look. I would prefer Italy but that's because of the food. I'm pretty flexible as to where - the easiest to access and on a cheapish airline route - with activities suitable for children.0

both of the sites above have provided reasonable to good hostels in spain, usa, uk and ireland. i would definately read the reviews and also look them on trip advisor.
I have found the reviews are pretty accurate, all the spanish ones were english speaking (Bilbao and Santander), there are picuters and ratings too, broken down into service, cleanliness etc. So you can pick a clean hotel with poor service or vice versa.Ready to Go Go!0
