From the Nationwide website:

Will I receive a replacement FlexAccount Visa debit card(s)?
Card Reader Security needs a particular type of chip on your FlexAccount Visa debit card to work.
If your card was issued after November 2007 it will have the correct type of chip so we won't need to replace it. If your card was issued before this we'll need to send you a new one. You'll receive this between 21 January and 5 May 2008. When you receive your new card you should start using it straight away, and securely destroy your existing card by cutting it in half.

I've recently signed up to the Nationwide Flex account for this trip. So a Massive Thank You to all of you who provided advice.

Having done my reading I'm stunned how useful the card could prove to be.
