Actually, I'd go so far as saying he was in a major sulk because I wouldn't authorise an unlimited budget. When I rolled my eyes and said that in fact, we couldn't *really* afford anything, although I accepted that we really need a computer (I've just been made redundant and although I could go to the library etc to surf for jobs etc, it's much more convenient to be able to do it at home, where I've got my CV to hand), the bottom lip went out and he went all "drama llama" said that we'd forget it and do without

If it wasn't for the fact that *I* want to be able to use it, I'd tell him where to stick it . It would be quite nice not to be an Eve widow for a while :D

However, I appreciate all the help I'm being given. It's all a bit "whooooooooosh" at the moment, but I'm sure I'll get there eventually.

For a decent spec it's normally cheaper and preferable to build one. However adding up fairly similar parts the overclockers deal above seems quite generous. Similar parts seperately would be (I'm sure this could probably be reduced by going for some cheaper parts, and processor is slightly better below, but still):

Plus operating system to be added to that package, plus the hassle of building, its alot cheaper nowadays to buy rather than build
