is the usage of debit card protected nder the Consumer Credit Card Act.

Hello,

I read some place that payment to articles/service are protected when using a credit cad under the Consumer Credit Act. does the same apply when debit cards are used.

Credit cards if the amount is over £100 and under £30k.

Applies to part payment also, so if you paid £20 on a credit card towards something that was £120, you'd still be covered.

Debit and charge cards are not covered, so you would be at the mercy of the bank.
  • thanks for the reply,

how does this work? do i get the money back from the bank and the bank gets it back from the company who provided the goods/services to me.

why are not debit and credit cards treated at par?
  • because using a debit card spends your money, and credit cards use the bank's money!
  • thanks for the reply,

but does not credit card use money allocated against me and in the case of a dispute, i have to bear the financial burden?

    what is a charge card?

    no, it doesn't.
  • thanks for the reply,

in case of a dispute, who bears the financial burden?
  • depends on the circumstances.

do you have a particular scenario in mind?
  • no scenario in mind.

i actually went through a travel agency for a package but unfortunately used my debit card. now i am planning to take legal action and had read some place that the payment for the service was protected when useing a credit card but since i used a debit card it does not seem to be protected :( (no wonder the garage refused to accept payment using amex :), i had to resort to the use of debit card )
any way the consumer act protects the usage of the debit card.

in future i will try to use credit card, only problem is they charge interest. i guess that is the pro and con of using a credit card.

nope. it's the same as handing over a bundle of cash, basically.

you won't pay interest if you pay the full balance off every month. i spend about 4k on credit cards every month (for the protection, mainly) but pay it off every month. never pay a penny in interest.
  • thanks for the reply,

but once you pay the balance off at the end of the month, don't you lose the protection of the consumer act, because the money has been already paid by you?
