Barclaycard has written to more than 1m customers telling them their credit cards are being cancelled - a move on a scale almost 10 times that of a similar policy announced by Egg last week. Also the accounts that are dormant will be cancelled.

Where exactly is this information coming from?
Common sense dictates that if you post something such as this, you back it up with some sort of proof.0 -

Don't worry, I'll do the honourable thing and actually be of some assistance to those that use MSE....regulars will know what I mean!

Unfortunately Mable, they haven't closed mine. Unlucky.0 -
Thanks to both of you for the information!

You say "also", but the article says...Also the accounts that are dormant will be cancelled.
...so it's only dormant accounts that are affected. The million-plus customers who have had their cards withdrawn were targeted by Barclaycard because they had not used their facility for a long time.
A spokesman for Barclaycard said: “We have sent letters to around one million dormant customers informing them we are closing their accounts. This is an ongoing policy."
And it's not a "similar policy", as the article says, because Egg weren't closing dormant accounts.
Nothing like a good headline eh? :rolleyes:0 -

The reduction in credit limits follows monitoring of customers’ credit levels and their ability to pay.0 -
But that comment applies only to the lowering of credit limits, not the cancellation of accounts. Anyone reading these forums in the last few weeks will have noticed that pretty much all the CC companies are lowering credit limits at the moment. Barclays say they are only actually cancelling dormant accounts - though I grant you that if they are anything like Egg, that may not be the full truth.0

thanks Daveboy for the link and Mable for raising the subject in the first place.....guess it's just a tidy up of the dormant balances for credit-line reporting but we'll see....For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070

My Barclaycard had been dormant for about a year but I recently transferred a balance from my Egg card to take advantage of the Barclaycard 6.9% interest rate for the life of the balance for existing customers.
A week later, Barclaycard write and say "at my request" they have now cancelled my credit card account. I complained to Barclaycard, explaining that I had not authorised this cancellation. They said their computer was showing a request from me to cancel the account and the account could not be reactivated. I was advised to reapply for another Barclaycard......thinking about my credit rating, I refused. I demanded the account be reactivated as the account had been closed without my authorisation.
Three days later, Barclaycard ring back confirming, indeed, I had not authorised the closure of the account. They put the closure down to a "fault" on their computer system. They also could not understand why the account could not be reactivated and put this down to another "fault". The account has now been restored by Barclaycard and they gave me a credit of £20 on my account as a goodwill gesture. They have also promised an internal investigation regarding this matter and I am awaiting an apology in writing.
If I had not stood by my guns on this, I would have been forced to apply for another credit card. Has anyone else had this happen to them?
