Carpet Cleaners - Bissell or VAX?

I want to buy a carpet cleaner and at first thought I would get the Bissell Proheat one - but have just read lots of reviews and 90% of them are bad and say that it breaks down after 3 uses!! Just wondered if anyone can recommend either the Bissell one or a VAX one for me?

Why not consider a steam cleaner? Mine works wonders.

I got a Bissell Proheat from QVC so at least I could send it back. Some bits broke whilst putting it together, I found it heavy and used huge amounts of carpet cleaner and had to be filled/emptied too often for my liking. I therefore sent it back before it packed up.

Bought a Vax (black one) which is fine although I don't like the head as much as the old fashioned spray fan type head. My friend has one of the small Bissell uprights, which she likes. I think on balance, with my kids, I would have prefered an upright with a brush system as the cylinder vax doesn't get the stains out as there's no agitation. However, the benefit is that i can clean my stairs and furniture with it.
