ATM Woes - Absolutely Livid

I am absolutely livid!

Yesterday (Saturday morning) went to get £300 from an ATM at a petrol station in our area. It is a Barclays ATM. Insert card, ask for the money .... the ATM spends quite some time thinking.... says "sorry, cant communicate with your bank, try again later" ... gives card back.... so I drive off elsewhere. Tried a Barclays bank, the ATM was out of order.... tried Nat West, said "sorry you have exceeded your daily limit"... hey!!!! I can draw £500 a day and so far I had none that I know off!!!
Ran across the road to the HSBC ATM to get a mini statement printed (I bank with First Direct) and hey presto the statement said I had drawn £300 from a Barclays ATM:eek: .... so I just get £200 and rush back home.

Call First Direct and they say it may reverse itself over the weekend, but if not they will send an ATM dispute form to Barclays to get my £300 back. As Miss Jocelyn says this will take a loooooooong time (5-6 weeks).

Has anyone else had a similar experience of being out of pocket due to an ATM? How was it resolved?

  • The machine will be balanced once a week or so, probably when it is next loaded with money. If the machine is over no problem you get your money back.
There will be a roll in the machine showing all the transactions - this will be checked so try and be accurate with your timing on the claim form so that it will be easier to find.
If the machine shows no malfunction and balances the dispute will be sent back to First Direct for them to either believe you or not.

First Direct say 5 to 6 weeks IMO 2 to 3 would be more in line.

I had a similar experience (though only for the sum of £20!) and the transaction reversed itself the next working day without me having to do anything.

I also had a similar problem, I went to natwest atm and tried to withdraw £60. I could hear the ATM trying to count the money but eventually gave me the card back and a blank reciept. It then flashed Out of order please do not re enter your pin.
I went own bank ATM and got a mini statement and it showed the money had gone out but paid straight back into account.

Same thing happened to me last week (for a tenner!) - I tried to withdraw it at about 8pm on a Friday but nothing came out. First thing Monday morning the correction was made.

Same problem here with Barclays ATM a few weeks ago: monies credited to my account a few days later.

On Saturday HSBC & FirstDirect debit cards were been declined in the shop I worked at.

To be honest Maestro / Switch / Solo is not the best payment method. Most other card payment schemes will allow for off-line transactions when there is problems with the network.
  • Same thing happened to me, tried to take out £80 for my train pass, it spat out £60 and displayed a message saying that the rest of my money couldn't be dispensed or something stupid like that, my bank got it back to me quite quickly.
