insuring a 17 year old

My son will be 17 in a couple of weeks, he has a 15 year old Nissan Micra garaged in Suffolk.

So far quotes for myself and his mother as well as him to drive (third party) have been over £1,000.

Any legal sugestions very wellcome, or recomendations of sympathetic companies

many thanks

provided you are already NAMED drivers on his policy there isnt much more you can do other than shopping around. £1000 sounds about right- he is a massive risk on the roads and insurers will treat him as such.

Don't always just look at 3rd party cover. I had some quotes for my son last year that were cheaper if I took out fully comprehensive cover.

he ended up with Endsleigh in the end, who were cheaper by around £150, but even on a tiny Fiat Cinquecento the total was £900 on a one off payment. Good luck with the hunt, it's just a pity there are so many young male high risk drivers out there.

Presumably your son is the main driver? When my son was 17 yrs old his first policy was £1600 (albeit for a bigger car) from Norwich Union Direct. At that time NU were very good for young drivers but not so much now. They do have a "pay as you go" policy which may be good value but is restrictive on times the young person can drive.

The one thing not to consider is putting yourself as the main driver and your son as a named driver if your son is truly the main driver. Many parents do this to bring down the cost but it is known as "fronting" and is illegal.

Have you tried ecarinsurance or liverpool victoria ? both can be cheap for under 21's.

A couple of years ago we got the cheapest quote with NFU Mutual at around £900 for a 1.1 Fiesta fully comprehensive while our son was a learner with both of us on the policy. Interesting (though perhaps not surprising), that girls are a much lower risk to insurers. My daughter is now a 17 yr old learner and on my policy for our Ford Ka 1.3. We are paying around £600 for the same cover!

The best quote we could get for our son this year, with 18 months driving experience claim-free at age 19 was £817 with www.elephant.co.uk. This is fully comprehensive cover with our son as the main driver of the same 1.1 Fiesta.

    Hope this helps ;)

  • I'd try Admiral if you haven't already.
I had only been driving a year, and had some recorded accidents (minor) when I went to them. They were (and still are - I've just been shopping around) the cheapest for me.

In fact for my first year, I tried a few others - Tescos were second best, and they're good because they only ask you about 10 questions.
Norwich Union and the AA went through what seemed like hundreds and hundreds of questions (Norwich Union phone call was over 25mins long). Norwich Union's quote was over £1200 for the year, and I think the AA marginally cheaper.

At the time of applying, I had pretty much every black mark against my name, possible.. male, under 25, living in the city, parking on the street, not been driving long, previous accidents.

With Admiral, my 1.4l hatchback (insurance group 4-5) came in at about £940 for the year...third party. That was a 12-year old Rover I bought for £600.
Given that your son hasn't passed his test yet though, and his age, I wouldn't have been surprised to see it around the £1000 mark.

I know that Admiral rate certain models of cars a higher risk, if they're frequented by boy-racers.. Saxos, Novas, etc.. but with a Nissan Micra, you shouldn't have a problem there.

For my 17 year old son we paid approx. £550.00 with QUINN direct insurance for 3rd party insurance which covers both him and his mum to drive a 2001 fiat punto 1.2 - mum being the policy holder, my son an additional driver. It was double if he was the policy holder. She had not any NCD but had been a named driver on my cars policy for several years. I went through Confused.com and most quotes were four figure except for Quinn.
The quote for me (Dad) as the policy holder plus my son as a named driver was not much less even though i have 8 years NCD. I didn't name myself.
If i want to drive the punto then i am covered by my fully comp policy on my own car.
Now my son is 18 and has passed his test and is driving the car more regularly, we will shop around in a couple of months when its renewal time and see if we can get a similar price but as him as the policy holder so he can start building up his own NCD.
Also, a friend of mine rang the POST OFFICE and got a price very similar for him and his 17 year old for a bigger engined punto + alloys.
Hope this can be of help.

Try Virgin. My DD2 who is 18 and passed her test a few months ago found them to be the cheapest and didn't charge any extra tp pay it over 12 months.Well worth a look.

We are going to be in this situation in 6 months time when my son is 17. We have started looking around for a car for him.

My nephew has just passed his test and he has paid £2,100 for his insurance on a 51 plate 1.2 Fiat Seicento fully comp on his own policy. My friends daughter has just passed her test and purchased an 05 plate 1.2 Renault Clio and paid £1,200 insurance. It is so wrong that males and females aren't charged the same amount as she is more likely to be a racer than my nephew.
