I have just started getting a Fatal exception error during Windows 98 start up and when I continue windows starts but without any sound and no sound icon at the bottom right hand corner. The message says "Fatal exception error OE has occurred at 0028: 00000026"
When this happens and I come to shut down Windows I get another Fatal exception error OE at 0028: C000BC4E and Windows will then not shut down, just freezes.
I would very much appreciate any advice anybody could give to help solve this problem. It seems to be something to do with not loading the sound but I am not computer techie.
Thanks.

Go to add/remove programs in the control panel, select internet explorer & outlook express, select repair and reboot.
which version of internet explorer are you using, I think exporer 5.5 is the most stable on win 98.0 -

I am using Internet Explorer 6 SP1.
What makes you think repairing IE will help as the fatal exception errors appear on start up of Windows, before loading IE?
Some articles on the internet suggest it might be a problem with RAM that my need replacing.Regards

Hi
Windows 98 is integrated with IE, & when you update IE you are also doing a bit of a windows update. Microsft probably encouraged people to install ie 5 because it included some fix's to a buggy win98, repairing explorer 6 might repair your currupt system file which I guess has been modified from installing some other software.0 -
drlight you are a star.
Took your advice and did the repair to IE.
Normal boot up and shut down followed.
