The old saying you get what you pay for is true.
AVG Anti-virus is a good free option, but don't expect it to provide as good protection as commercial products such as Norton. Personally I would recommend Kaspersky Anti-virus though (https://www.kaspersky.com).
Anyway, on the subject of Norton you can get it for £19.97 including free delivery from https://www.amazon.co.uk which beats this deal. Haven't seen anything better, but do try searching if your particularly interested in it.0 -
It does seem that it is available at other places for the same or less so as it's not a Quick! Grabbit I'll move this over to Shop but don't drop0

Norton messes up computers. Each day when I turn my computer on AVG Free updates automatically. Software companies can do this by charging business users, but giving the same product free for home use
Do not be fooled here into paying for something when you don't need to, there are excellent free products available for protecting your home PC, such as ZoneAlarm and AVG FreeThanks to all who post constructively.

Sorry I have to disagree, there is a reason why Norton Anti-virus is so popular and that is because historically it has been a good product. Take a look at this anti-virus comparative:
Firstly we have AVG which since records began in February 1998 has failed 20 times and been successful only 9 times. That's a 31% success rate.

Secondly we have Norton Anti-virus which since records began in January 1998 has only failed 6 times and has been successful 28 times. That's an 82% success rate, which is just a tad better than AVG I would say.

It is these higher detection rates, coupled with improved user interface and security levels that have seen Norton Anti-virus as a best buy in practically all computer magazines for the past 5 years++
I don't love the product, I use Kaspersky instead, but you have to recognise that AVG is not really competition to the commercial products. It is free, that's great, but you get what you pay for is what I'm saying.

and do those statistics take into account how many PCs Norton Antivirus has messed up over the last year or so, compared to AVG Free? Thanks to all who post constructively.

As I said, I'm not a great supporter of Norton Anti-virus, I don't use it. I'm not recommending Norton Anti-virus but I'm saying there are benefits to purchasing commercial anti-virus protection in general. One of those benefits is shown in the detection rates below.
In the case of Norton Anti-virus 2005 I agree that it does appear to be a very buggy product. However if you looked at previous editions up until 2004 the product wasn't buggy, and I believe offered a better package than AVG. In general I would say commercial products do offer better user interface and detection rates.
Kaspersky for example has 27 successes and 13 failures (67.5%)

Mcafee, a more well known product has 20 successes and 18 failures. (52.6%)
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?nai.xml
Where as AVG has 9 successes and 20 failures (31%) and Avast, also free, has 13 successes and 19 failures. (41.9%)0 -
Well, all i know is that i have used AVG on loads of laptops and pcs with no problems at all. The only remaining PC i have that hasn't been rebuilt without Norton 2005 on it, regularly tells me there is a virus on the PC but that it can't delete it - about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
AVG updates every time i switch the machine on and has alerted on and successfully removed several viruses for me.
It is a commercial product as if you are a business you have to pay for it.
I do agree that Norton 2004 and even older versions were better - maybe a case of Norton resting on their laurels?
At least with this thread we are highlighting the need for antivirus protection - its shocking how many people dont have it AND highlighting to people that a big name off the shelf in your local PC World doesn't necessarily guarantee you've got a decent product.
Glad someone posted the list again of 'must haves' on your pc - AVG is the only one i'd thought of!0 -
This thread is suggesting to people that you buy can Norton, and it would be a bargain at £19.99. I'm saying save yourself £19.99 as the current Norton product causes as many problems as it fixes, and it isn't a bargain at £19.99 - and wouldn't be a bargain, even if they were giving it away for nothing!
Many members of the online game-playing community would rather have no anti-virus protection at all than have Norton! Previous versions of Norton may have been superb, but the current one isn't. I know nothing about Kaspersky, or any other retail anti-virus product, because I always found AVG Free to be all I needed, with an occasional scan from Trend Micro to check that it's been doing it's job properly (and it always has)
Incidentally if anyone wants a free virus-scan of their PC by Trend Micro, it can be obtained at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
(You'll probably need to use Internet Explorer)Thanks to all who post constructively.
