raising roof and loft conversion in a bunglalow?

We've nearly exchanged on a 1950s bungalow. The neighbouring property has veluxes in the roof, a permanent wooden staircase and the roof is boarded, plastered and has electricity and heating. The only issue? They didn't realise the head height was going to be too low to be a habitable room. I think it's very expensive storage.

I've looked into lowering the ceilings which seem to be a cheaper way of using the loft for bedroom space, but am worried it'll look a bit crap tbh. Was quoted £25k but I think we're just going to move instead.
We've loved living in a bungalow though, everything easily to hand and only a few footsteps away lazy !!!!!!s that we are.
