Old Anti-Virus Software

Not sure this is strictly the right Board for this question so please move if necessary. :)

Sorting out car boot stuff again and I've got various Norton Systemworks and Anti-Virus software with their boxes and in fairly new condition.

Question is....can I sell them at a car boot, or not?

When I bought them I registered them with Symantec but always bought the new version when it came out each year rather than just renewing the existing one. As a result I have several years worth of software sat there that still does the job as it can all be updated.

Does the fact that I registered them mean I now can't sell them or do anything with them other than binning them?

Advise please? I don't want to waste them but nor do I want to get into trouble by selling them on if I'm not supposed to. I dont know how it would work if the registration key had already been used by me?

technically they are single user so you are not meant to sell them on

not sure if this would cause problems if someone else tried to register it

Thanks Browntoa. Bit of a pain in the bum really as it seems such a waste. :(

The word there is 'technically' which pretty much means 'at your discretion!' You should be able to sell them on as long as you don't have the old ones installed. The registration key will still work on the buyer's computer unless it requires internet validation - of which I'm sure it doesn't.

However if the antivirus that you bought only has a licence that lasts for a year, then it will be useless to the buyer as it will be over a year old and so they wouldn't be able to update.

Thanks guys. The software did only have a years licence...I never thought about that bit. :o You can tell I'm never going to be a Tycoon can't you?

I've read posts by people who reckon they just uninstall and reinstall the software and the licence then runs from the new install date. How do they get away with that? Is that not the same kind of thing?

It's true, when you install it remebers certain hardware configurations and stores them so if you uninstall & re-install it will know it is on the same computer and carry on any unused subscription, if somebody uses it on thier computer they should get a new install and trail/subscription, you then register it with your own details, but you don't have to register for the software to work.
