Home Insurance Refused - Does It Affect Car Insurance

Hi all, just a quick question...

Had my home insurance refused as I made eight claims in one year. The reality is it was one incident where by tots damaged my furniture but Liverpool Victoria treated every piece of furniture as one claim thus at my renewal they refused to insure me. The complaint is currently with the Ombudsman

Now, it is difficult for me to get home insurance, but when it comes to my car insurance, do i need to tell them insurance was refused. Do the car insurance people share the same info with the home insurance people.

All replies will be appreciated, thank you.

Depends on the wording of the question. If, as is usual, it is something along the lines of "Have you ever been refused insurance or had special terms imposed" then yes you do have to disclose it, as the wording does not restrict the enquiry to car insurance.

Has anybody ever come accross an insurance company that is more specific to this phrase such as mention car or home, instead of the usual wording "Have you ever been refused insurance or had special terms imposed"

I have had 15 years of no claim driving, so an incident with the home insurance seems unfair.

I cant think of any but you will be asked for information and then this will be referred to a car insurer.

If they won't insure you then you move on to the next until they will. What I would say though is if you fail to mention it, your insurance will be invalid anyway due to non-disclosure.

  • If the complaint is currently with the FOS, wait for their decision before applying, it seems unfair LV cancelled the policy due to this...especially if they told you it would have to be 8 claims, but surely the 8 x XS wouldnt be worth claiming for?

apparently, for you all to know that if you notify an insurance company of a loss, it is down on your file as an incident, regardless of whether you claim or not. I only found this out afterwards. Your premium for the next year goes up anyway, so for this reason i claimed for 4 out of the 8 items, but it is still classed as 8 claims.

Did your child damage all 8 items in one go or over a period of time?

    My insurance asks this:
Has this driver been refused insurance, or had insurance withdrawn in the last 5 years?
I would think this will not be a problem unless you change insurers but I would speak to a good broker and ask his advice.

It was all done within a space of half an hour, so to answer your question, all in one go.

Can I just ask you to go through the details of what exactly happened- at the moment the info provided isnt enough to say really how many proximate causes there would be (and therefore how many claims it would be)

I would advise though that if the insurers dont want to renew your policy, there is nothing the FOS can do to force them.

To reply to your question FlameCloud, i live in a really large house, and one day in 2006, i was ironing upstairs, and left cbeebies on for my two tots downstairs. They got hold of a permanent marker and marked all my furniture, carpets, walls etc. Thats about it. When i told my insurance company, they took all the details but when i followed up a week later, thats when they said it will be eight claims. I wasnt told straight away.

I would not want to go with Liverpool Victoria again, even if they paid me, but my problem is that as they refused insurance, all insurance companies asks the same question "has insurance ever been refused". At the moment, as my history has 8 claims showing no insurance company wants to know. I want FOS to change it to one claim, as I believe it to be one incident therefore one claim.
