Any disadvantage in putting an offer in too quickly?

I live in Scotland so have the whole bidding war thing going on if properties go to a closing date.

An option is to put an offer before it gets to that stage which is what I want to do on a house I've seen which I really like. As far as I know I'm the only noted interest so far but it only went on the market on the 5th Feb (Tuesday). My plan is to e-mail my solicitor this weekend and ask her to put an offer in on Monday but I'm wondering if I should hang on a few more days? Thing is I'm scared someone else might get in there before me and I could miss the boat. But Monday might be just a bit too soon - they may reject it purely to see if they can do better by leaving it a while longer.

Is it possible to hold onto an offer - i.e. to not actually reject it but just wait & see if there's a better one comes on the table or do you have to say yes or no to a buyer within a certain amount of time?
