Compensation for delayed flight?

I have just returned from Lanzarote.
The flight back to Manchester Airport was 9 hours late. Even though I rang from the hotel before going to the Airport the flight time was confirmed on a recorded message. We were told as soon as we reached check in there was a 9 hour delay as the aircraft had a technical problem we would have to wait for another Airline to take passengers to Gatwick and then reurn to Lanzarote to collect us.
When we eventually boarded, the Captain apologised on behalf of the original airline but said it was usual to leave passengers at their hotels and not on the Airport when there was a long delay.
Are we entitled to compensation for what was a lengthy and uncomfortable delay?

Grumbler's link is fine, but all the new legislation says is that you are basically entitled to nothing for delays. You are only entitled to compensation if the delay is due to the flight being cancelled and you having to travel by alternative means.
So, being delayed by many hours but eventually flying under the original flight number doesn't entitle you to more than subsistence during the delay.

ONLY a 9 hour delay!
Most insurance will only pay for at least a 12 hour and then you need to get a report from the airline involved.
£20 is about average.0
