Renting - References - What is Usual?

Friend of mine (yeah, that's what they all say! no really!) has a renting question ...
It's a private rent (not agency). She's been asked to provide a reference from her current landlord (which she expected), but she's also been asked to provide references from her bank and from her employer. First time she's been asked for these, although it could just be a case of her being lucky in the past!
Not a problem, but she was just wondering whether this is usual. I have no idea
, so I said I'd ask my buddy experts  on MSE!

My last two letting agents have asked for copies of bank details, wage slips and an employer reference. Not unusual, although I'd have qualms about handing over such information to a private landlord as opposed to a letting agency credit checker.poppy100

we had to get references from employers to prove we were in work and that we held permenant jobs0

sometimes you will have to provide a guarantor (esp if you a student). landlord ref and employment contract pretty standard. the wage slips and bank statements are to verify that the employment contract wasnt self made."enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0
