If they say send us a fee of £XX then yes, probably is a con.
As for the MOT thing, my boyf just paid £25.00 at the local Fiat Garage, its usually worth ringing round a few, as our garages ranged between that and £42.50.
Incidentally, there is a thread somewhere (im guessing in the transport section) about getting them done at council test centres, most councils have one for thier vehicles and they have no vested interest in making up faults, as they dont do other garage work. Some ambulance places do it too. As I said, check the transport board and type in council mot in the search, that will come up with something!

If a garage cuts the price of a MOT it usually finds a way to make up the difference,by ripping you off with something that don`t really need doing.0

A MOT at Ellesmere Port & Neston Council's depot costs £29 for a car with a CAT, less for cars without or if you are disabled(I think). Because places like this don't do repairs for the general public there's no huffing and puffing and "this is gonna cost you" business. If the car fails you get a detailed list of whats wrong, get it fixed whereever you like and take it back within 2 weeks for a free re-test.0

shop around you can get cheaper, but as someone said, they may try and get a few £££ out of you elsewhere

i would not pay more than £30 for MOT. You dont have to have the repairs done by the garage doing the MOT.0

Yes, have a look around smaller garages tend to give cheaper MOTs,I pay at
the moment £20 but have paid over £40 in Edinburgh, ask around for
recommendations.A wise man changes his mind, a fool never will.

There's a thread called Save on your MOT Bills on the Motoring sub board. Lots of good ideas including advice on getting your motor done at a Government Testing Station, who have no financial incentive to fail the car as they don't repair them!
