npower signed us up for business acc. on de-energised meter

I am looking for some help on rather convoluted problem, as I can't see the woods for the trees and would appreciate an objective opinion please. :)

We have a derelict coach house in our garden, which we are planning to develop this summer into ancillary accomodation and home office etc.

There are 2 meters in the coach house, and we've had a string of nasty letters and threats from npower, basically relating an unpaid bill from business prior to us moving here, and recertification of the meters, and their general maladminstration.

After quite a lot of aggro, it seems they will stop hassling us to pay someone else's bill, (although don't fully trust them on this), and meter+ have checked the meters, which is that one is phase 3 and other is 'normal' and both are de-energised.

Without my permission npower signed us over thephone up for a business account and they've written to say we will soon receive a bill from us.

Can they charge us a standing charge for de-energised meters? We've lived here for 2.5 yrs and had no idea there were open accounts with very previous owners, going back 2 or 3 owners. We took over the Scottish power accounts for the main house.

They've also sent us forms to transfer the account to domestic, as we've said we will soon need electricity for the building project.

There's been no indication of how much this will cost.
Do we actually owe them anything ?

I don't want to have anything to do with this company, they've caused us a lot of stress and grief, and are impossible to communicate with. They scheduled martistrates court a few days before Xmas for supposedly denying access to the meters, all lies.

I jsut want an end to it, no more hassle.

any tips most welcome :) Thanks.
